your presence solid
enough to hold dark at bay,
like a father, but your shoulders sag.
Dust blown all to hell
covers you inside and out. You climb rungs,
past timbered beams. Lantern fixed
at cap brim rocks with every step.
Glint of crystal, tap of hammer,
creak of railcar and ladder
are at times your only companion. Water drips
torture mind, feet, and lungs.
You must travel backward through light
more like the inside of an argyle sock
to find other people's voices and the one voice
with no name. Stitched fireworks
daily at dawn and dusk are feeble blessing for one
starved for the comfort of hearth
and hugs from loved ones upon safe return.
Only your heart keeps you warm.
