This National Park is one of the best ones I have ever been to. Make sure to pick a nice cool day to go, wear proper clothing for the weather and the biggest thing is to remember to pack slip resistant shoes. The shoes will be very important in visiting this park. The park opens at 7am and closes at dark year round. There is a fee to enter the park. Either $3 on foot or bike, $5 in a car or $20 for a pass that's good for the year.
There are many things to do at this park. You can come down for a picnic or tour the visitor's center but the most exciting park and what brings people down here is to climb along the rocks at the Potomac. There are a few different paths to go down and observe the massive river. There are also plenty of trails for rock climbing. All of these have different difficulty levels so make sure to choose one you are able to safely climb on. There are over fifteen miles of hiking trails around this park.
Fishing is permitted as long as you have a Virginia or Maryland fishing license. There is no swimming at anytime during the year. The water is very rough and has very strong currents. It's amazing to stop and watch while hiking around on the rocks. Make sure to bring a camera, there is so much beauty you'll want to capture every moment.
There are guided tours if you prefer someone who knows the area to show you around. They have them at different times and days throughout the year so make sure to call in advance to find out when there will be one. The phone number to find out the dates and times is : (703)285-2965. The visitor center at the park also has a wealth of information.
This is one of the most beautiful parks in the area and on the east coast. The Potomac is amazing and being able to hike on rocks around it is quite an experience. It's worth the drive through the long winding roads to take a day at this park.
