George P. Bush to Go to War

Later, a Political Career?

Mark Whittington
George P. Bush, the thirty three year old son of former Florida Governor Jeb Bush and the nephew and grandson of two Presidents named George Bush, will likely go to war in the near future as part of his Navy Reserve unit.

George P. Bush becomes the latest offspring of a political leader who will fight or have fought in the War on Terror, either in Afghanistan or Iraq. Others include John McCain IV, serving in the US Navy, James McCain serving in the US Marines, Track Palin, serving in the US Army, and Beau Biden, serving in the National Guard.

While it may be somewhat premature to consider a Bush the Next Generation in politics, a political career appears to be where George P Bush is headed. George P. Bush moved from Florida to Texas and has hinted that he might run for political office there in four to eight years. While George P. Bush's father Jeb remains popular, his more famous Uncle, George W., is not. But if there is anything that a Bush know, political unpopularity, like glory, can be fleeting.

The Bush family has been in public service for almost six decades. George P. Bush's great grandfather, Prescott Bush, was a United States Senator from Connecticut for two terms. George P. Bush's grandfather George H. W. Bush was a Congressman and then President of the United States. George P. Bush's father was Governor of Florida. George P. Bush's uncle George W. Bush was Governor of Texas and then President of the United States.

In some ways the Bush family appears to be a Republican version of the Kennedys, wealthy, political ambitious, and not without their share of glamour. Of course the Bushes lack certain things that the Kennedys have, such as the personal family tragedies, the lurid scandals, and the overly adoring media.

Can George P. Bush make a go at it in politics? He is telegenic, intelligent, and well spoken. George P. Bush is Hispanic through the fact of who his mother is. The last should be a huge political advantage, considering that Hispanics are America's fastest growing ethnic group.

The bad aftertaste some feel about George W. Bush's Presidency is bound to fade, as people gain perspective and as the current President continues to squander popularity and political capital. There is a bumper sticker with George W. Bush's image and the caption: "Miss Me Yet?" George W. has no further political ambition, having reached the top of the cursus honorum. But by the time George P. Bush is ready to start running for office, chances are that George W. will have morphed from failed President to modern day, GOP Truman, an alder statesman ready to pass the torch, as someone once said, to a new generation.

    Steve,
This is not the GW bashing column. Jeb's son will hopefully be closer to his dad's style of politics than his uncle or granfather. If he is not he will be ridiculed for being a patsy for the corrupt wing of the Republican party. His father is well liked, bi-lingual, insightful and widely respected. (imagine that word associated with a Bush after GW's blunders)

I disagree with you Penny. The President should have stepped in and called these people out for their stupidity and incompetence. He did not and in my eyes the buck stops there. He was still rather popular and could have boosted his numbers while angering the least competent in the government. Instead, he embraced the incompetence and failed to separate himself from the blame...starting his spiral down in popularity and ending in the lack of popularity for his administration and Republicans in general.
Fast forward to the near future and we still have an lack of concern for incompetence and corruption in public service. How much are the health care lobbies paying to keep the rules in their favor? I know, but if I say it here you willstill have to look it up to believe it. The same is true of the financial sector, but there is not a word about reforming lobbying rules, either in the house or the "news."

G.W. is responsible for growing the federal government to its largest size ever with the addition of the Homeland Security Dept. Not since Herbert Hoover has such a growth of government occurred. Also, fiscally responsible? What a joke. Medicare part D is a huge boon to the insurance industry.
The cost is staggering. And guess what, the architect or creator of this Plan D did not even wait for the Bush admin to leave office taking a presidential exemption so he could become CEO of the biggest beneficiaries of the Plan D Money. This would be illegal if he did not receive the special exemption from G.W. personally.

Get over your hate of the Bush family. If you know something that we all do not know, tell us. Repeating the old news along with some of your opinions is as worthless as some of the Bush administration's foreign policy. Here is an example of NEWS... Had they stayed in Afghanistan and driven the Taliban into Iraq, Iran, Pakistan and their neighbors, there would be no Taliban threat in the middle east. Much the way people know who strangers are in their small towns here in the USA, the end result would have been a lot of beheadings of the corrupt, non-traditional muslims..
(ie Taliban)...many at the hands of Saddam Hussein who would not have tolerated their presence on his soil.
Your stomach turns because you whine too much. You make my stomach turn because you are just another ignorant American. As long as we continue to have the choice of ignorance on the left and right we will have chaos in our foreign policy and countless expenses for such stupidity.

Cheri-get your facts straight. In order for a President to order federal assistance to a city or state, they need to be asked. Pres. Bush specifically asked the Black Mayor New Orleans and the female Gov. of LA if they wanted to declare a state of emergency. This was several hours before the hurricane hit. They declined. As far as some of the destruction , Mayor Nagin was negligent when he left the school buses sit in ther parking lots. They SHOULD have been used to transport residents out of the area. When something happens in your town, do you expect the President to do something or do you expect the local government to do their jobs and render assistance? What gripes me even more is when Pres. Bush went to New Orleans, he was critized for using so much fuel and costing so much money for him to go. But, it's ok for the current person to constantly be out of DC. At least with President Bush, HE ALWAYS put the USA first-He did not apologize for keeping this country from any mor

It is truly sickening to hear the phrase "six decades of public service" about the Bush family when the last eight years under a Bush was by far the worst eight years in the history of our country. Both he and Cheney lied to everyone about weapons of mass destruction and got us into a war that is not winnable. Cheney and Bush "outed" a CIA agent which was illegal and highly unethical. They should both be in jail. Bush sat there and let people in New Orleans suffer and die for no apparent reason other than he was inept at his job. When you consider how many other citizens were hurt financially by the Stock Market collapse, it truly turns my stomach to consider that another Bush is in the wings ready to pounce on Americans. Hasn't the Bush family done enough irreparable harm to this country?
