The legendary New York Yankees owner George Steinbrenner has died at the age of 80 on Tuesday. The popular sports icon was first reported to have suffered a massive heart attack last night. As one of American sports most prominient figures,Steinbrenner known as "The Boss" will forever be noted in the history books for bringing back to life the most successful sporting franchise in the nation.
The Yankees boss pushed the American baseball league to strive for excellence. Returning US baseball to the significance and popularity experienced back in the 70's,Steinbrenner was respected and revered by millions. His path to greatest was somewhat hindered by two suspicions from baseball.His contraversal suspicions were brought on whenSteinbrennerhired a private investigator to dig up information on one of his players and formaking illegal campaign contributions to President Richard Nixon's 1972 re-election campaign.
Steinbrenner bought the Yankees in 1973 for $10 million. Forbes has estimate the Yankees empire is now worth $1.6 billion.Due to the tenacity of the great Steinbrenner, the Yankees won seven World Series titles and 11 American League pennants since 1973.His death came on the day thethe annual all-star game to be played on Tuesday night in Anaheim, California.
According to the New York Daily News, Steinbrenner died at about 6:30 a.m. ET today in Florida. "He was an incredible and charitable man," Steinbrenner's family said in a statement. "He was a visionary and a giant in the world of sports. He took a great but struggling franchise and turned it into a champion again."
The Steinbrenner family also confirmed that the funeral would be private and that there would be an additional public service. Steinbrenner just turned 80 years old on Independence Day on July 4th. His death was just days after the legend Yankees announcer Bob Sheppard died on Sunday at age 99.
