Georges Seurat, a respected French artist remembered most for his large-scale pointillist work A Sunday Afternoon on the Island of La Grande Jatte, is the focus of this collection of free art lesson plans and resources. Several of these resources require only limited preparation, and items from around the house. Others may require a trip to the art store.

Hey Kids, Meet Georges Seurat - "Georges Seurat was born on December 2, 1859 in Paris, France. His father Antoine Chrysostom Seurat was a native to Champagne, and his mother Ernestine Faivre was a Parisian. He also had a brother and a sister, Emile and Marie-Berthe. Georges first studied art by taking drawing lessons with sculptor Justin Lequiene and then continued his education at the Ecole des Beaux-Arts in Paris."

Georges Seurat Biography - "Georges Seurat (sÉ™ RAH) was born in Paris and studied art at the Ecole des Beaux Arts when he was eighteen years old. He studied there for two years and then spent some time in the military. He studied Impressionism, but thought he could improve on the methods artists of that time were using. He spent his lifetime studying color and color theory. He devised a method of painting which used dots of paint instead of using longer brush strokes to create the picture."

Turning Your Computer Into An Easel
Create a pointillist work on your computer with Kid Pix or a similar program. using the pencil tool. Your students will "paint" their images with dots, enhancing their pictures with darker and lighter colors for highlights and shadows. Grade Level: 3-8

Work an online jigsaw puzzle of A Sunday Afternoon on the Island of La Grande Jatte. The puzzle may be worked as is, or the pieces may be rotated to provide a greater challenge for older students. Grade Level: 2-6

Grab your crayons and color Georges Seurat's A Sunday Afternoon on the Island of La Grande Jatte (excerpt). Consider coloring this page in Seurat's pointillist style of dots rather than traditional coloring strokes. Art masterpiece coloring pages provide children with an opportunity to interact with a piece of art in a very concentrated way. Not only do they look at the masterpiece, they become involved with it. This involvement with the artwork will, as a result, leave a much more lasting impression of the artwork, and possibly a greater appreciation for art in general. Grade Level: 2-6
