Georgia Advances to 2010 Women's College World Series

Georgia is in the 2010 Women's College World Series after beating California. Georgia didn't just slide into the 2010 Women's College World Series field either, as they crushed the California Bears in the Athens Super Regional this weekend. Coming into the 2010 Softball Playoffs, Georgia was the No. 6 overall seed, while California was given the No. 11 overall seed. They both swept through their own first round regionals, and it seemed like it could be a really competitive Super Regional when it became California vs. Georgia. It was anything but that though, as the Georgia offense showed exactly what this is a team that could do well in the 2010 Women's College World Series.

California put ace pitched Valerie Arioto on the mound for Game 1 of the three game series, touting her 1.26 ERA this season as something that could keep Georgia in check. Led by a two-run home run by Alisa Goler and three runs in the first inning, the Georgia Bulldogs got out to a fast start and didn't look back. When the dust settled on Friday's game, Georgia had beaten California by a score of 7-0. Game 2 was set for Saturday, and while Georgia scored first in the top of the first inning, California scored their first run of the Super Regional in the bottom of the first to tie things up and one apiece. That was the last time that the California Golden Bears would see someone cross the plate on Saturday unfortunately.

As Game 2 progressed for Georgia vs. California, the Bulldogs scored four runs in the second inning, and then tacked up another five runs in the fourth inning. The California offense couldn't do anything the rest of the way, only mustering three hits for the game. Because they couldn't cut into the Georgia lead, the mercy rule was enacted, bringing an end to the 2010 season for California far earlier than they might have hoped. Georgia took out the first Pac-10 team to lose in the 2010 Softball Playoffs, and in doing so became the third team to qualify for the 2010 Women's College World Series. Games start next week, but we still are waiting on the results from five other Super Regionals to see which eight schools will make up the full field at the 2010 Women's College World Series in Oklahoma City. Brackets for the World Series will be set once all the teams are known.
