Fort Jackson was named after a past Governor of Georgia named James Jackson. It is the oldest standing fort in Georgia. It was built by the order of Thomas Jefferson in 1808 for defense against naval attacks in what is now Savannah. The fort did its job in the war of 1812 but in 1864, in the Civil War, the General William T Sherman surrounded the city and the confederates were greatly out numbered. They surrendered and the fort was not used again after that. In 1909 it was decommissioned and is now a historical landmark. 1 Fort Jackson Road Savannah, GA 31404 (912) 232-3945
Kennesaw House
Kennesaw House was built in 1845 and is located in Marietta, Ga. It has served as a cotton mill, hospital, restaurant, hotel and now it is the Marietta Museum of History. It is one of the oldest (if not the oldest) buildings in Marietta. It was untouched by General Sherman during the civil war because it was a hot spot for union soldiers. The Kennesaw House is said to be haunted and many ghost of soldiers have been sighted. The original owners (James Bulloch and family) are said to still haunt the house. When the house was used as a cotton mill the workers consisted primarily of slaves. Their ghostly apparitions have been sighted as well. 1 Depot Street, Marietta, Georgia (770) 794-5710

Kennesaw Mountain National Battlefield Park
In June of 1864 General Sherman took a huge step forward in his goal to capture Atlanta. He defeated the confederate soldiers (by outnumbering them) led by General Joseph Johnston and forced them south away from Kennesaw mountain. By July of 1864 over 5,000 soldiers had been wounded and killed. You can visit other popular sites within the park such as where the Battle of Kolb's Farm took place. The national park covers 2,888 acres and has 17 miles of hiking trails. The historic downtown Marietta is located 2 miles from the park. 900 Kennesaw Mountain Dr. Kennesaw, GA 30152 (770) 427-4686 Fax (770) 427-1760
Sweetwater Creek State Park
Sweetwater Creek State Park contains the ruins of a textile factory called the New Manchester Manufacturing Company which on July, 9 1864 was burned in the Civil War by union forces. This factory was a target of General Sherman's because it produced materials for the confederate army such as cloth and tents. The Roswell Mill, located near by was also burnt down for making the grey cloth used in soldier's clothing. Sweetwater Creek State Park gets its name from the Sweetwater Creek which flows through it. 1750 Mt. Vernon Road Lithia Springs , GA 30122 (770) 732-5871
