Georgia Fails to Lure Chavis Away from LSU

End of the season brings playoffs, bowl games, championships and changes in coaching staff at many universities. The changes are due to firings, promotions and coaches leaving for better opportunities at other institutions. You can't blame them for that. However, it does cause a bit of a shakeup when you are preparing for a bowl game and one of your best coaches gets offered a position at another college.

That is exactly what happened to LSU this year while preparing for the Capitol One Bowl. LSU's defensive coordinator, John Chavis, was tapped by Georgia Head Coach Mark Richt. The news quickly hit the airwaves and LSU fans found themselves in despair thinking about past situations with head coaches being offered new coaching positions.

Richt thought he had found the right man in Chavis for filling the vacancy at Georgia and had even spoken directly to LSU head coach, Les Miles.

LSU's Les Miles quickly put the fire out and announced that Chavis will be staying with LSU. This announcement was confirmed by a spokesman for the Athletic Department at LSU who made the statement that Chavis will be offered a raise and will be staying at LSU as the defensive coordinator.

Chavis has coached at LSU for a year now. He joined the staff last January after coaching at Tennessee for 14 years. Chavis had this to say about staying at LSU, "I'm staying at LSU and I'm excited about remaining here. LSU is a great place. This is an outstanding football program and I'm happy and honored to be a part of it."

Meanwhile the search continues for Richt and Georgia for a new defensive coordinator. He fired Willie Martinez and two other defensive assistants on December 2, 2009. Rodney Gardner, defensive line coach is not a candidate for the position according to Richt.

Having the position remain open through the second week of January makes recruiting more difficult, as this interferes with commitments and last minute recruiting efforts. Richt said he will make an announcement as soon as the job is filled.
