Georgia's Farmers Market in Plano, Texas

Ruth Eshbaugh
I have never been satisfied with the produce in most grocery stores. It is hit or miss. When I woke up and had a hankering for good food this morning I decided to look for a local farmer's market. I have driven by Georgia's Farmers Market for years, but never stopped. I am not sure why. Thinking maybe I just need to get closer to the source of my food I decided to give the market the test. There is a lot of discussion lately about how maybe we need to start supporting small local farmers over the hauled in produce from commercial farms. When I tasted the selections I purchased today, I think I am in love with the idea. It just seems to makes a lot of sense, if not cents with the price of gas today.

Georgia Farmer's Market isn't a Farmer's market in the traditional sense, but a family owned and operated produce store that buys fresh. The Texas peaches I bought were tree ripened. There is an old time feel to the place. I was amused by some of the young skateboarder who stopped by to admire the old fashioned bottles of Dr. Pepper cooing in a tub of ice. Georgia's Farmers Market is located near downtown Plano on 15th street. It is easy to recognize by the red and white stripe awnings in front of the store.

As I took in the color and scent of the fruit and vegetables around me I notice at shelf of preserve and jams. Quickly I honed in on the apple butter and decided to put it to the challenge. Was it as good as grandma's? She was a school cook from Ohio, where apples rule. Hard to beat her recipe, I thought. The jar I picked up did, to my delight. It is the real thing.

When you pass through downtown Plano on the way to the mall stop and taste and see, it good food; fresh pasta, nuts and gourmet coffee and teas are available too.

Georgia's has been opened in Plano for 10 years and under the current ownership of Vick and Carmela for the last five. I will be back.
