Germaine's Luau has been acclaimed as America's Best Luau in America's Best 100 and has been filmed by ABC's Good Morning, America. Knowingly, my family had been anticipating our first Hawaiian luau after transferring to the islands. I'm pleased that Germaine's Luau was our first experience here in Honolulu. I really believe this festivity captures the very essence of a traditional Hawaiian setting. Germaine's has been established since the early 1970s, and it is very familiar with its routine while putting on a spectacular show. My family had a great time learning some of the culture, eating great food, watching the performance and interacting with participating guests.

What is a Luau?

Today in contemporary times, luau means a feast for comfort and social enjoyment. A luau originated not only for the social aspects, but as a way of celebrating their gods. It depends on the hosts if spiritual respects are made, but often nowadays luaus are a social affair and means of entertainment.

Location

You will find Germaine's Luau at the sunny west side of Oahu, on beach-front property near Barber's Point Lighthouse.

Arriving

To begin, we formed two moving admission lines. One line was for guests who had already paid for their tickets in advance and the other was for ticket sells. The prepaid line moved a lot faster for us, luckily! We were greeted with shell leis and photographed. We were told our pictures would be available for purchase after the evening came to end.

Seating

A very large area on the ground floor covered with lines of tables arranged in great view of the stage. Seating was first come first serve basis only. There was plenty of room for everyone attending.

Food & Drinks

Food is all you can eat American Hawaiian buffet. Generously a wide range of food served here: Kalua Pig, Chicken Long Rice, Island Fish, Teriyaki Beef, Fried Chicken, Tossed Green Salad, Poi, Lomilomi Salmon, Rice, Pineapple, Coleslaw, Three Bean Salad, Dinner Rolls, Haupia, Fresh Pineapple, Vanilla Coconut Cake and Chocolate Cake.

They serve complimentary Soft Drinks, Kona Coffee and Tea. In addition, they serve a variety of Alcoholic and Non-Alcoholic Blended Tropical and Specialty beverages. At the main bar they serve: Mai Tai, Blue Hawaii, Pina Colada, Chi Chi, Lava Flow, Germaine's Special, Standard Bar, Premium Bar, Domestic and Imported, Beer and Wine. I personally enjoyed the Mai Tai for the evening. I found it a perfect and refreshing blend.

The Show

After the conch shell is sounded the Royal Court enters. The underground oven is uncovered to reveal the main course, Kalua Pua'a. Just as dusk falls the stage performance begins. Dramatic dancers dressed in brightly colored costumes begin a passionate story to rhythm of beautiful island music as we eat beneath the palm trees, moon and stars. Followed by the talented Fire-knife dancer performing as the evening highlight leaves us amazed in his flawless ability. Throughout the show there is great interaction with the guests and crowd participation. The hosts really made us feel welcomed to an astonishing experience of Hawaiian culture.

Germaine's Luau lives up to its reputation of recapturing the spirit of old Hawaii, while giving an enchanting memory to those of the new and experienced to the islands of Hawaii.
