German and Czech Marionette and Puppet Souvenirs

Carol Bengle Gilbert

The art of puppetry is alive and well in Germany and the Czech Republic. Both countries are home to esteemed puppet and marionette theatres. But why limit enjoyment of this art form to your vacation? Marionettes and puppets make memorable souvenirs and are conversation starters once you incorporate them into your household.

Choosing a Marionette or Puppet

The level of detail is what distinguishes a so-so marionette or puppet from an outstanding one. Facial expression is key as is meticulously-crafted clothing and props.

Movement is also essential for a marionette. Expression is governed by movement, so look for a marionette with realistic joints and movable parts. Very simple marionettes may be controlled by just a few strings while more elaborate ones may have considerably more.

When it comes to movement, remember the words of famed Stuttgart puppeteer Albrecht Roser who died in April: "Don't force the frog."

By this, Albrecht meant the movement comes from the marionette and is not imposed on it by its handler.

What to Do with Puppets and Marionettes

Not everyone who buys a puppet or marionette has the interest or skill to become a showman. But that doesn't mean he has no use for them. Many puppets and marionette are works of art and can be displayed as such. One couple I met in Bamberg hung a collection of life-size marionettes on the walls of their dining room. My own puppet and marionette collection has been a defining element in different rooms of my house over the years.

Families with children will find that children love to express themselves using marionettes and puppets whether they have mastered puppetry arts or not.

Finding Intriguing Czech and German Marionettes and Puppets for Sale

Prague is home to several quality puppet and marionette sellers. They are located near major tourist attractions, including town square, Charles Bridge, and Prague Castle.

In Germany, marionettes and puppets are popular in Stuttgart where sellers such as Stefan Tuempel and Spiewaren-Kurz are located. Specialty shops are the best bet for finding a variety of unique marionettes and puppets, but even toy stores can be the source of surprising finds. I bought my favorite wooden clown puppet from a toy display in Radolfzell.

The more you shop for puppets and marionettes, the more variety you discover- and the harder it becomes to make a choice. Uwe S¶renson's workshop in Hamburg will even construct incredibly-expressive, made-to-order marionettes that resemble you or someone you know.

I loved playing with puppets as a child, but I always knew that it took more skill than I had to make them seem so real. Thank you, for such a fascinating glimpse into the world of puppets and marionettes!
