Germs in Fast Food Restaurants

Certain Areas that May Surprise You

Kyle S.
Fast food restaurants are known for their quick eats and convenience but has anyone ever stopped to think about the hygiene inside the restaurants and even how your food is handled. Ever since the birth of the fast food restaurant, there have always been cases of hygiene related problems but some of the other areas often get overlooked. Areas such as the play zones for example. Those massive kid attractions that you know never get properly cleaned like they should. This is just one area a lot of people probably just don't think about with fast food restaurants.

I've known a lot of employees that have worked fast food restaurants and they agree that the play areas of the restaurants are often cleaned to an extent; they still wouldn't want their kids playing in them. I'm not going to name off any specific fast food joint but years back there was a case at a fast food restaurant where an infant had been playing in the ball pit when he had been playing started to cry and after a few days the infant started to get swollen and was getting really sick. The infant survived but the parents made a case to the manager and concluded the infant had gotten sick from their restaurant. They went back to the ball pit to find that had dirty used syringes at the bottom of it and not to mention tons of dirt, candy wrappers and other garbage. There was also another case where a rattlesnake had made a home in a secluded fast food restaurant down south. Nobody was injured in that case but it goes to show you that these things just don't get the right amount of cleaning they should.

Bathrooms are another part of the fast food restaurant that in my opinion never get enough attention. I've found that gas station fast food joints have the better bathrooms for some reason. I've seen places that offer worse bathroom cleanliness but it's just another case of employees not caring or doing their jobs plus managers that only seem to care if they have health officials coming soon.

Something people probably don't stop to think about is how well their food has been handled? I mean people make mistakes but sometimes those tasty fries or beef patties may have been on the floor or on other dirty surfaces. I know for a fact that when people drop food on the floor, they should throw it away and that will be a loss of income for that restaurant. Even here at one of my local fast food joints, I knew someone close that worked there and they had an incident where a new guy had dropped six very pricey and premium beef patties on the ground and threw them away. The manager saw it and demanded that he takes them out and just cleans them off because they cost too much. This kid obviously had a big problem with this and ended up quitting within the next few days. To my knowledge, no health inspector or anything was ever brought to the attention of this.

Employees period seem to have a hard time with pitching something that's dirty because of laziness. They feel no need or responsibility to replace something that has a defect so they go ahead and give it to you anyways. This is problem that seems to be getting worse then better. When I would go out to eat with my buddies in high school, almost every day that we were there, we would see similar instances of this. If it was ever our stuff that was mishandled, we would demand something new and of course the employee always gave us glares and sighs like he wanted no part in helping us at all. Managers too now days even get some nasty attitudes towards customers.

Next time you take your kids to the nearest fast food restaurant, you should probably take a quick check to see the clean factor of the play zone. Make sure to take a good long look for any messes, trash, and its just a good idea to avoid the play zones in winter time period to avoid colds and sickness. It's always a good idea to order inside because you can at least see your food getting prepared half the time to avoid any nasty surprises later on. If I ever have kids, I think I'll just skip the fast food joints period.
