Get Ahead of Your Health Needs by Choosing to Take the Next Right Step

Creating the Habit of Pro-Active Choice for a Healthier You!

Suzanne Bennett
To be pro-active is to take control of a situation by planning in advance, acting in anticipation of what may arise, rather than waiting for problems and putting out fires. Instead of waiting and reacting, you can take control of your health by choosing to take the next right step. Every step you take in your daily activities is a choice. By making it a habit to choose the most active alternative, you choose on the side of health and well-being. When you take a walk or play an outdoor game with your kids instead of watching a TV show, you are taking a pro-active step toward caring for yourself and enriching your life. By making more physically active choices when doing yard work and house work, and playing upbeat music as you work, you are encouraging yourself to keep your body moving and your outlook vibrant. These simple, positive choices can make all the difference in the world to the way you think and feel and ultimately to your overall health.

You may feel that it is too late for you to begin making changes to your lifestyle, but that just isn't true. Now is always the best time to start something new. There is, as they say, no time like the present. The small changes you make now will pay off in big ways in days to come. These incremental improvements may not be immediately apparent, but if you consistently make healthy choices for a year, you will find yourself a healthier, happier person when your next birthday rolls around.

By enhancing your lifestyle with excellent food and joyful activities, you will improve your quality of life today and help yourself avoid health complications later on. A healthy lifestyle is an excellent line of defense against many kinds of cancer, heart disease, osteoporosis, arthritis, and diabetes, not to mention stress-related illnesses and conditions. Even if you already have some of these conditions, improving your food consumption and adding positive activity to your life will help. By maintaining a healthy lifestyle, you can look forward to days free of illness - or at least with symptoms minimized- and filled with ample energy to do all the things you want to do.

One of the best pro-active choices you can make is to choose to feed yourself well! Many people nowadays believe that they must starve themselves in one way or another to be "healthy". What they really mean by healthy is "thin". Of course, it is good to stay fit and trim, but it is not necessary to be as skinny as a rail. This is definitely not healthy!

You are what you eat. The food choices you make from day to day make a real difference in your health and well-being. We seem to have the habit these days of making food choices based on calories because we equate thinness with health. This is not a good way to nourish your body. When choosing what foods to eat, it is important to keep nutrition your primary concern. Of course, it is important not to overdo calories, but don't let them be your primary focus. Your main goal is to feed your body good, wholesome, nutritious food. In this way, you will look and feel your best and have energy to meet every challenge.

Remember to choose natural foods that have not been heavily processed. Choose lean meats, and whole grains. Make fresh fruits and vegetables the basis of your food choices. Enjoy desserts in moderation, and try to choose sweets that are as close to natural as possible, given the choices you have before you. When you learn to lean towards healthy food choices, keeping nutrition foremost in your mind, you are well on the way to a healthy and fit body. By participating in pleasant physical activity every day and eating well, you increase your enjoyment of the present and invest in your longevity and long-term health.
