Georgia Lund

Tis the season for fresh produce and good deals on home grown vegetables and fruits, that is if you know how to shop at a Farmer's Market. With these insider tips, you can get the best deals in town on fresh produce.

Leave The Shopping List At Home

The best way to shop at a grocery store is with a list so you can avoid impulse buying, just the opposite is what's needed at a Farmer's Market. Leave the shopping list at home when heading for out to buy fresh produce. Different produce ripens each week, prices change weekly, be flexible and plan on-the-spot menus around the produce that has the cheapest prices so you can snag the best money saving deals.

Shop Late In The Day

At the end of the day when farmers are packing up their remaining produce and getting ready to head home is when you can get the best deals of the day. To get the best bargains (and maybe even some free produce tossed in) ask the farmers if they have anything that is too ripe to sell or too ripe to last until the next market day. This tip can snag you a wide variety of ripe fruits and vegetables for a fraction of the original cost. If you're looking for a lot of fresh produce for freezing or canning, you can score super cheap prices from farmers who have a box or two of tomatoes, peaches, etc., they need to sell quickly and you're willing to buy them all.

Don't Pass Up Roadside Stands

Don't drive past those roadside stands selling fresh produce on the way to the Farmer's Market, they often have the best deals. Roadside stands may not offer a wide variety of produce, but if you just want a couple of specific produce items, like a tomato and cucumber to slice for supper, stop at the roadside produce stand.

Make Friends With The Farmers

A little conversation with the farmers (at the Farmer's Market or at a roadside stand) goes a long way in snagging the best deals. Farmers usually enjoy sharing their favorite cooking methods for their produce, so you just may discover a new favorite recipe. Ask them which crop will be ripening next so you can plan ahead for getting the best deals.

Since my sister is playing "farmer" this year, we are reaping the rewards of her labors - we enjoyed fresh lettuce, tomatoes, cucumber, onions, garlic, peppers, beans and peas :) Nicely done, cheers ;)
