Psychic readings are entertaining and can be spiritually and personally revealing. Tarot readings are fairly popular as well, though other forms of divination - tea reading, runes, mirror and water scrying, glossolalia and pendulum readings - are available as well. At one time or another, you will find yourself in a position to take advantage of these services. Most readers charge a set amount for a set length of time. For that reason, you should do whatever you can to make the most of the time you spend together. A little preparation can give you the most accurate and involved reading your budget allows.

The first thing you should know about psychic readings is that they are to some extent vague. That's the nature of visions and divinatory tools. Most readers experience flashes of information that they must then piece together. Some are sensory (tastes and smells), and some are disembodied emotions. Images and words may also be involved. No matter how intuitive your reader is, he or she is unlikely to accurately predict the winners of the Super Bowl or your lucky lottery numbers. Now that you understand this, you can turn pointed questions that require very specific answers into open-ended questions that are more accessible. You will save time you might have spent asking things that cannot be answered to your satisfaction or insisting that your reader tell you the date of your wedding.

Once you are equipped to ask questions, consider what you want to know. You don't necessarily need to make a list of questions. Gather your thoughts before asking for a reading. There's no need to pay for time spent thinking of the first thing to ask.

Choose a reputable reader. This is very difficult. Some read for entertainment and others for religious purposes. Readings are available in readers' homes, at events, online and by telephone. It's not possible to definitively quantify the ability of a reader. In my opinion, spiritual readers are more likely to take the practice seriously and give you the respect you deserve. You may be able to research a reader's previous clients. If she has a list of references, contact them. If there is a website of his testimonials, read it. Take the feedback with a grain of salt. Some readers may inflate good readings. Others may have a client complaint for reasons out of his hands. For example, the client may not have heard what she wanted to hear, or may have been frustrated by the openness of the reading. Guide yourself toward a reader who is likely to be competent.

Make sure you understand the reader's fees before beginning a reading. Does he charge by the hour, by the card or by the question? Be prepared to keep time yourself. She may not be able to alert you at the end of each minute. Some readers' fees are negotiable. Don't be afraid to ask. Will your reader give you a special fee if you schedule ahead of time? Would a discount on the by-the-minute rate be possible if you commit to a thirty minute reading? Are you part of a group or couple? Ask your reader if there is a special rate for a group reading. Remember to treat the reader with respect. He gives his time and talent and deserves to be compensated. Don't expect a free reading, even if he is a friend or relative. If you are expected to pay upfront, do. In the end, a reading is a purchase. If you aren't comfortable with the price, don't buy.

One complaint that I have heard is that readers take too much of the client's time. I urge you to be patient and understanding. Reputable readers need at least a minute or two to get their bearings and focus. Tarot readers will ask you to shuffle the cards, or will take a little time to shuffle them. Psychics may ask to touch your hand or make eye contact for a moment before beginning. These delays are part of the reading. If you feel that the preparation time is excessive, ask about it after the reading is finished. Some readers may offer a partial refund. Others will simply apologize or defend their practice. Please resist the urge to slander by reporting your reader as ineffectual or inaccurate if you feel you were slightly overcharged for this time.

Readers have a unique profession. They provide a service that is sometimes mocked or labeled as immoral. They are generally self-employed or read as a secondary source of income. Each one has a unique story. They find their niche in a different way and read with their own techniques. I know that you'll find their services to be exciting. You may be pleasantly surprised or receive valuable advice. And with a little preparation and knowledge, you can make your experience both fulfilling and economical.
