Get Your Dream Job

Want to get your dream job by 2015? Start your journey now by doing the following six steps. Each will bring you closer to working in the field of your choice. Do:

Step 1: Find a mentor.

Don't fight for your dream alone. Ask for help. Find a mentor (someone who's where you want to be career-wise) and get guidance. If no one is available, go to the library. Pick a person in history that's made a name in the field you want to conquer and follow in his footsteps.

Step 2: Obtain a degree.

Increase your chances of getting your dream job by obtaining a degree. Meet with a career counselor to determine which course you should take in order to qualify. Then, plot your course. Decide when you want to enroll and attend classes.

Step 3: Do an internship.

Even with a degree, you won't have all of the knowledge necessary to complete your dream job successfully. You have to get your hands dirty. Build up the skills you can't learn in school by doing an internship. Internships give you invaluable, real-life experience that can help you understand what it truly means to work a particular job. They also open doors to paying positions and inside connections.

Step 4: Ask HR for help.

Already working in a company, but not in the position you'd like? Get your dream job by working with your Human Resources (HR) representative to plot a course toward this goal. This professional can tell you about the different levels you must go through to obtain a certain job. He can also give you a realistic timeline so you don't grow weary or impatient.

Step 5: Analyze your skills.

What are your skills? Do they line-up with your dream job? Take account of what you bring to the table. You may need to acknowledge some of your weaknesses before you make true progress. For example, if you're a writer who has trouble spelling and wants to market a book, you need to understand that an outside editor might help you land that book deal. Be honest with yourself, so you can compensate for those things you don't do well.

Step 6: Note your milestones.

Whenever you accomplish something major that brings you closer to getting your dream job, note it. Celebrate your victory and enjoy the journey. You might be surprised to find in the years to come that those things you thought were hard become funny and an interesting part of your path toward success.

Make headway toward the job you really want to do by using these steps. In time, you'll be living out your dream instead of just thinking about it.
