Holbrook, AZ 86025
United States of America
In the Holbrook area, which happens to be home of the famous Wigwam Motel (Have you slept in a wigwam lately?) and the only 90-degree turn on the Mother Road, there is a great little Mexican restaurant where you can enjoy the best Mexican, local or American food around.
Romo's Cafe is located at 121 West Hopi Drive in Holbrook. Hopi Drive is actually old Route 66. As you drive down it, you are actually traveling on the Mother Road.
The food there is outstanding and you won't find any better Mexican food for miles and miles. People in Northern Arizona come from all around to eat at Romo's Cafe.
The menu is varied. If you want mouth-watering Mexican food, they've got you covered. However, if you want something local but not spicy, they also have plenty of options. And of course, if you want a good hamburger, steak or meat and potatoes type of dinner, they've got that too. Dinners run from about $6.95 - $12.95 and a combination plate is $8.95.
Each dinner is served with homemade chips and hot sauce. On Fridays, they also serve a fresh salsa. The Friday salsa isn't too hot, but be careful with that hot sauce. It is fiery! It is also delicious and bottled hot sauce can't hold a candle to this freshly made masterpiece.
The highlights of the Mexican menu include enchiladas in your choice of red or green and made with shredded beef, ground beef or chicken. You can also get cheese enchiladas. The chile rellenos are also excellent and come smothered in either red or green sauce. If you're in the mood for something different, try a chimichanga, which is basically a deep-fried burrito with your choice of fillings, smothered in red or green chile.
For local fare, Romo's best is the Navajo Taco. The Navajo Taco is flat, not curved , and fills the entire plate. The bottom is a round piece of Navajo fry bread, and it is topped with beans, your choice of ground or shredded beef, lettuce, cheese and tomatoes. The hot sauce that comes with the chips is extra-delicious on top of a Navajo Taco.
All of the American fare is delicious, but the hamburgers are especially so. They are nice and big and juicy, and come with all the toppings you could imagine.
A piece of sopapilla comes with most dinners and makes a great dessert. That is, if you don't use it to help take the heat out of your mouth while you're eating your meal. A sopapilla is a piece of fried bread, similar to Navajo fry bread, but lighter and airier. Top it with honey for a sweet finish to your meal.
