Get an Energy Boost Without Sugary Drinks

Jamie Brown
Just like a toy that's powered by a battery, your body will start to move slower as you run out of energy. If you need a boost during the day, your kneejerk reaction might be to drink coffee or a sugary energy drink. But there are healthier alternatives-basic vitamins, herbs, supplements, and actions that you can take if you need a jolt to get you through your days.

B12 Spray

B vitamin are extremely important to energy production. B12 in particular has a reputation as a key energy boosting substance. B12 comes in a variety of forms, including pills (let it dissolve under your tongue) and shots (get one at your doctor), but you can also buy a convenient B12 spray. Keep it in your purse or in your desk and squirt a few sprays in your mouth whenever you need an energy boost.

B6

Vitamin B6 is also a very important B vitamin for your body when it comes to generating energy. It helps release the energy (glucose) from stored foods that you've eaten. So take a capsule or two an hour or so before you usually start to feel tired in your day. You can also just take a B6 supplement with breakfast to help you get all of the energy that you need from your food.

Guarana Capsules

Guarana, a substance found in many energy drinks, is an amazing energy booster. It comes in capsule form. You can take a dose of Guarana during the day to keep your motor running. But keep in mind that guarana contains a natural form of caffeine, so it can have the same effects as coffee (a high then a crash).

Gingseng Gum

Ginseng is a popular energy boosting substance. It usually comes as a root or capsule, but you can also buy Ginseng gum. Pop a piece in your mouth and chew whenever you feel like you're about to crash.

Walk for 5-10 Minutes

You probably think that going outside for a walk is the worst idea when you're feeling zapped. But in actuality according to a study by Robert Thayer, PhD (California State University, Long Beach) moving around, especially with a brisk walk, can give you just the energy boost you need. So when you're at work feeling down and out, go outside and take a 5-10 minute walk down the street and back.
