FLOR's modular and completely customizable floor design system is "eco-friendly." How's that, you say? Green rugs?

Not really. Well, yes and no. They can be the color green if you want...but they are already way ahead of schedule on the nation's plans to get environmentally responsible and make America a healthier and greener place in which to live.

FLOR's flooring is made of renewable and recyclable materials that meet or exceed the standards of Green Label Plus for carpet and adhesives. The Green Label Plus program symbolizes the carpet industry's commitment to a better environment for living, working, learning and healing. FLOR doesn't claim their carpets are made of 100% recyclable materials (yet), but they continue to work on research and development that will make that possible. In the meantime, when you're ready to pull up that old FLOR tile and get something new, they do not allow your old carpet to go to waste. They will recycle that, too, so it doesn't end up in a landfill.

FLOR's carpet tiles come in a nice-sized selection of colors and styles and textures that will suit a variety of tastes and moods. Things like the button rug kit, the fedora, morning coffee and toy poodle, as well as the soft and plush styles available in love ewe, short shag, velvet twist (my personal favorite) and "walking on clouds." They come in stripes, solids, and are made to handle everything from areas where there is light foot traffic to heavy-duty foot traffic.

What is most unique about FLOR is that they have a 'Configurator' (they call it a "FLORBuilder") where you can go online and tell them how big a room you want to map (it automatically adds a 10% overage amount to be on the safe side); it them uses their own design tool to create your custom design floor in pretty quick time.

You select your own squares, one at a time, in rows or columns, then select the color and texture you want and apply it to your design with a mouse click until you have a unique pattern that is all your own.

For my own small room (a six-by-six), I chose four styles: The velvet twist cinnabar, the velvet twist gourd, the velvet twist moon and the velvet twist sunflower because I like plush textures and because I prefer deep rich dark colors everywhere except in my kitchen and bath. Voila! Something I like, done my own way, and for under $300. FLOR will also send you three 6x6 samples for a small fee of five dollars if you want to try before you buy.

If you're looking for something a little different for gifts, try FLOR's gift design ideas such as Princess by Disney for little girls, Putt up or Shut Up for the golfer, Pixar Cars by Disney for the boys (or little girls), or the sea grass stripe for the nature lover. FLOR also carries a line of accessories that help you help yourself install the carpet easy and fast.

You can do the world a favor and have what you want the way you want it at the same time.
