Apparently, this time when she tried rebooting, the screen came up black and at the very top was this string: 'localhost:/ root#'. It did not boot beyond that message.
Well the warranty on my iMac has long run out and my AppleCare was out also. I considered reinstalling everything, but dreaded having to set all the applications up again when it came back up...if it came back up! Besides, I wasn't 100% sure at this point that it was necessary.
So, using my iBook I decided to research online and see if I could figure this out for myself. I first checked on the Apple site to see what I could gain there. I also typed in the error itself to see what that gave me. Most places were not very helpful or else they would suggest what the problem was and eventually get to a point where they offered help, for a fee.
Finally, I somehow stumbled upon Macosx.com
Macosx.com is one of the best established Mac community support sites on the Internet. It has an established user base and an online presence of nearly 6 years and a foundation of almost 10 years as one of the best technical support sites on the Internet to offer free online support.
After setting up an account at Macosx.com I finally got to a point where I was able to type in my computer problem. Volunteers run the site, so one has to be patient and sometimes wait a day or two before a response is given.
I got a response about 24 hrs later. The tech that addressed my problem said it sounded like we'd filled the disk up to the last available byte, which was a very dangerous thing to do; best practice was to make sure I always kept at the very least 10% of the disk space free. Reinstalling was indeed the way to go for my problem.
Not too surprisingly, the reinstall didn't go smoothly, but the Tech continued to work with me on a daily basis until we could reach a resolution and close my ticket.
It was nice that once I submitted a ticket it could be tracked in my queue so I could see if it had been looked at and be notified if it had been and given instruction as to what to do.
Macosx.com provides a complete consumer technical support for Mac, Windows and Linux, as well as for all applications that run on those operating systems and the hardware connected to the computers that run them. All this at no charge to the end user!
I even got support over the phone and the same tech stayed with me until the problem was resolved! (That's even better than the support I get at work!)
Macosx.com also has a Forum where you can share your own tips and tricks, have discussions, and learn from and help others with their computer problems.
Macosx.com also has a Topics section that addressed related Tech Support questions and Forum Post/Threads for Support Topics on applications from A-Z!
Apple Software such as:
iCal, iChat, iSync, iTunes, Leopard, OS X Server, Tiger
Design, Web, and Office applications like:
Acrobat, Dreamweaver, Flash, Illustrator, InDesign, Photoshop
Desktop and iLife applications,
Internet applications like:
Eudora, Firefox, Google Earth, Internet Explorer, Opera, RealPlayer, Safari
And help with iPods, and Apple laptops!
With all of this great service and support you might wonder how this site is able to exist.
Well, truth be told, the site depends on contributions from the people it helps. Any denomination is accepted, but a $30 donation will give you 3 months of VIP status.
The site accepts all major credit cards as well as Paypal. If you've ever needed technical support for your computer or its software and peripherals you know you'd be hard-pressed to find a better deal, and the service is outstanding!
