Get Free Tickets on Megabus from Knoxville, Tennessee to Washington, D.C

Gayle Crabtree
Pull over bus companies. There's new low cost carrier in East Tennessee. Right now, you can get free tickets on Megabus from Knoxville to Washington, D.C. While they last,10,000 free seats are up for grabs. Use the promo code "ILUVDC" on the website to check for availability. If they are sold out look for seats as cheap as $1.00 or $3.00.

Since my daughter lives there, I had to check out Megabus from Knoxville to D.C. Flying home without a suitcase cost about $250. Including the layover, it took 11 hours for her to get to her dorm from the time we left home.

Travel time is estimated to be 9.5 hours. My daughter can potentially travel round trip on Megabus from Knoxville to D.C. quicker than she can fly and for less than it costs to do her laundry.

My younger daughter and I have decided to take Megabus from Knoxville to D.C. and travel back as a family with my oldest daughter. This means buying two round trip tickets to Washington and a single one way ticket back home.

I was interested to see if free tickets on Megabus from Knoxville to D.C. were really available. The promised offer sounds too good to be true. I went to the website to make our reservations. A toll-free number is also available.

The company services parts of the U.S., Canada and the U.K. Each country has a designated section of the site. I clicked on U.S. and was able to input my data in few minutes.

As promised, the free ticket was available for the 7:45 a.m. bus. That wouldn't work. I can tell my daughter to be at the station that early but trust me, getting her up early won't happen. Booking a later departure set me back a whopping $6.00 which included a $3.00 processing fee for booking by phone. (The fee is only .50 to book online.)

As many sites are these days, the Megabus site was slow. I received an error message when booking which necessitates the phone call. A little while later the site cleared up enough to allow me to book two more round trip tickets online.

The Megabus website is user friendly. Creating an account took only a few minutes. With that done, my next task was to book the two round trip tickets on the Megabus from Knoxville to D.C. route. These cost a total of $19.00 with fees.

Customers are told to be prepared to load and unload bags themselves. The site says that each bus will make legally required stops and is equipped with bathrooms, WI-FI and electrical outlets.

Whether these work on the Megabus from Knoxville to D.C. or not is questionable. Megabus plainly states that ticket prices will not be refunded if the WI-FI doesn't work. That seems fair to me. Power lines and hills means that my Virgin Mobile Mi-Fi occasionally doesn't work in my car around Knoxville or East Tennessee and my car outlet never works. The company also indicates loading and unloading your own luggage. To me, this seems to be fair exchange for such a low price.

I'm optimistic about the trip on Megabus from Knoxville to D.C. My expectations are to get there and back safely but that's it. Count on a future update about the trip.
