Get Gold with the Very Best Metal Detector

Emma Jacobs
Has the treasure hunting craze hit you? Then a metal detector is the specific instrument you need to have in your arsenal. To obtain the detector best suited to you, you need to be clear about your requirements. Metal detectors are designed and built to be used in targeted areas. They can incorporate additional design specifications such as detection of a metal item at a pre-designated level, in a deeper zone, underwater, and even buried in the sand. The bottom line is that you need to arm yourself with the detector that best suits your purpose.

A.G.Bell invented the metal detector as a special purpose device, his particular purpose being to find a bullet lodged in President Garfield's body. Although a brilliant idea from a great inventor, the first patent failed due to it's inability to detect the bullet. Gerhard Fischer, an inventor, successfully took up the challenge in the 1920's to re-invent Bell's patented application. Shortly after Fischer's improvements to Bell's patent, metal detectors were successfully employed in both commercial and recreational fields.

Metal detectors have improved and grown in popularity since the 1880's. The range of instruments enlarged to apply not only to industry and commerce but also to home and recreational hobbyists.

Detecting equipment is uncomplicated and uses electromagnetic induction to detect metal. The control box consists of four primary parts; these contain the mechanics necessary to run the device;included are the controls, batteries and circuits, the detection coil which is the actual metal detector (usually visible at the base of the instrument) and lastly a shaft which links the detection coil and control box. An optional extra is the stabiliser which secures the detector during movement.

You don't need to be highly skilled to operate a metal detector. You just press the marked button and once the instrument is "ON" and active you slowly sweep it across your chosen area. A current is generated via an oscillator which runs through the search coil. A magnetic field generated by the coil then detects any metal in the area you are sweeping.

You know when the metal detector finds metal as quite an audible noise is emitted from the instrument just to let you know you may have struck gold. With the metal detectors being so easy to operate this hobby is open to everyone, with the only drawback possibly being the metal detector's weight.

Since Bell's first patent was lodged; upgraded metal detector technologies plus improved capabilities has enabled treasure hunting to hit a new height. The new designs use very low frequency, beat-frequency oscillation and pulse induction technologies. And interestingly enough, while these modern detectors can find a small, buried coin they can also, if configured properly, completely ignore any buried metallic garbage within the same range. This is so different to my old metal detector which alerts me to any and every old tin can lying around!

With improved technologies metal leakage has been successfully detected at commercial food, beverage and chemical manufacturing plants; the detector has become a multipurpose instrument while still fulfilling it's initial purpose.

Technological advance and improvements in this field means that not only has the metal detector become valuable to commerce, it is also a boon to the beachcomber, and general treasure hunters - such as me.
