Get into the Bible: Have You Read the Word Today?

Working to Get Rid of the Number One Excuse for Not Reading the Bible: I Don't Understand

Michael Mann
The number one reason most Christian do not study the Bible is simply because they don't understand it. Many might be reading a translation which is just difficult for them to understand, while others are not asking God for help in understanding His word. So, we will look at some things that can be done to assist you in reading God's word.

First, start your Bible study time by offering up a prayer of understanding, remember that as 2 Timothy 3:16 points out, "All Scripture is God-breathed and is useful for teaching, rebuking, correcting and training in righteousness." (NIV) Ponder upon Psalm 119:130 which tells us that, "The unfolding of your words gives light; it gives understand to the simple." (NIV) And as always, keep James 1:5 in mind, "If any of you lacks wisdom, he should ask God, who gives generously to all without finding fault, and it will be given to him." (NIV)

Second, find a translation of the Bible which is easy for you to read, keeping in mind that while each translation is different, all of God's words are inspired by the one whom created the universe. However, not all translations or versions are good and some try to be a bit more literal than others. Keep in mind though, that while man might work hard to figure out what is meant by this or that, God is not one who is confused by what He says.

Third, find a place you feel comfortable reading God's word. While we all might have seen someone on a bus, a train, or a plane reading God's word, you might not feel comfortable doing this yourself. Find a place, even if it is your bedroom and study God's word.

Fourth, find a time which suits you. For some it's best for them right before bed at night and in the morning before they start their day. For other's the best time for them is during their daily workout on the treadmill. Whatever time works best for you, try to get into God's word often. Just like physical food fulfills your worldly hunger, God's word will fill your spiritual appetite.

Lastly, there is no set requirement for reading God's word. What I mean by this is there is nothing saying you have to read 3 hours a day, each and every day. Simpy reading God's word without allowing for yourself to understand what you are reading is not good either. Using the items above, try to put together what you need to get into God's word and allow it to sink in. If that means 5 minutes in the morning and 5 in the evening, using tools such as "Our Daily Bread", a dictionary to help with words you don't know, whatever. Do your best to get into God's word as often as possible.

You know what, these are great tips. It's so easy to slip into the habit of not reading the Bible, but just trying to keep it simple and routine is the key. I always do your first step, which is a great suggestion, about praying before I read and asking God for clarity. Nice work!
