Look sharp and play the part of a successful employee

Interviewing for a job is similar to playing a part in a play. You are the star and you need to look the part. How you present yourself influences the hiring manager or human resources representative. Read on a find out what to do to dress the part and create an interview costume.

Your costume represents your self confidence, attitude, and personality. Let your costume represent how you would appear on the job. Dress appropriately . . . and kicked-up a notch.

Men need to wear a business suit and a tie. No matter what your level of employment, you can't miss with the traditional suite image. Save the business casual for after you are hired. Dressing seriously indicates that you are serious about your career. Women also do well with a business suit as their interview costume. Keep makeup to a minimum, avoid spike heels, wear a tidy hair style, and keep accessories to a minimum.

Create your costume with current styles. Out of date clothing and styles do not present your best image. Be current. Be sharp. Be professional. A far-out, too modern style will also not present you in the best light.

Once you gather your interview costume, put it on and practice wearing it. Go to the post office, dry cleaners, grocery store. Get comfortable with how it feels. Break-in new shoes. Practice applying your makeup. Walk and move in your costume.

The costume presents you at your best. Do not over-do the costume. Your best assets are still your job skills and experience. The costume is the wrapper that best highlights the real you. Be yourself, be confident, and be prepared.
