Get Your Kids Away from the Electronics While in the Car. Here's a Great Game to Play

Lchaim
Do your kids get bored in the car? We have a portable DVD for one car and a built in DVD player in a newer car we just recently purchased. But the kids eventually get tired of watching movies and I hate to see them on all the electronics. They're too old for coloring books and they usually don't want to read in the car. Here's a game they play which might be fun for your kids as well. They call it the "Car Game." It's an alternative to the license plate game or signs game that many kids play.

The idea of the "Car Game" is to be on the lookout for certain colors and types of cars. Here are the basic rules: Look for old style VW Beetles (Herbie type Bugs, or Punch Buggies, as my kids call them), the new style VW Bugs, Hummers, PT Cruisers, and the same model and color of the car in which you're currently riding. Yellow (or canary as the kids call them) cars give additional points.

For instance:
New style punch buggies: 1 point
Old style punch buggies: 2 points
Any canary colored car: 2 points
PT Cruisers : 3 points
Same model/color of your car: 4 points
Hummer : 5 points

Then you can combine cars/canary color for more points. For instance, A canary hummer is worth 7 points and a new VW Bug is worth 3 points. The first person calling the car gets the points. If two people call out the car at the same time, they both get the points. Also, if someone calls out a car, at least one other person in the car MUST have already seen the car. This prevents someone from making up that they had seen a car. The last rule is that no one may call the same car twice!

This is a good game for the kids to really pay attention to what's around them. So turn off the electronics and get the kids involved in a game like this!

This sounds like a lot of fun. We sometimes still do the Ispy game in the car. But then we run out of things in the car to spy. lol.

These types of travel games are great on long road trips.
