Buy Gas in the Morning
A one-degree temperature change will make a big difference in how much gasoline value you are getting at the pump.
Gas is denser when it's cooler. When the temperature rises, it expands. This makes gas more valuable in the morning because you are getting less "fluff" for each gallon, whereas the value decreases later in the day when the temperature rises. Consider buying gas in the morning before work rather than on the way home in the evenings.
Gas stations do not make up this difference at the pump. The price for gasoline is the same all day, regardless of the temperature.
Is Your Gas Tank Half Empty or Half Full
When you have half of a tank of gas, this is the best time to fill up. The less air you have in your tank, the less the gasoline will evaporate. Gasoline evaporates very quickly. By filling up before the tank gets empty, you will get more value for your money.
Forgo Rushing At the Pump
At the pump, you will find that the nozzle has three settings; slow, medium, and high. Squeeze on a low setting, rather than set it in fast or high mode. All of the hoses have a vapor return and when the fuel setting of the hose is on high; this increases the vapors, which will in turn, returns to the ground. We are there to pump gasoline into our vehicles, not to return it to the ground. This is one time that rushing will definitely cost you. Take your time at the pump.
Pass Go and Do Not Collect Your $200
Remember your money is not play money. It is hard-earned money, and you want what gas you paid for. If you see a gas truck filling the storage units at the gas station, do not stop in, do not collect your $200, go directly to another gas station. The gasoline is stirred up while the truck fills the storage unit. Filling your tank at this time may cause you to fill up with some dirt, the same dirt that normally settles at the bottom of the storage tank.
Get a full gallon of gas for the money you paid.

Post a CommentThis is my first experience with Cheryl Myers. If typical, my advice is to run the other direction as fast as you can. These recommendations are amateurish. Nothing here is backed up by science. Anyone with minimal analytic capabilities can do a simple search on the internet and find authoritative articles to show these recommendations are pure BS. Frank (05/17/2009) is absolutely correct.
These tips are backwards or incorrect. First one - storage tanks in the ground do not change temperature. Ever been in a cave? By the description, it would be better to buy at the highest temperature of the day (afternoon - biggest density change), however, car emission control compensates for gas density so there is no benefit to either time of the day. Second - gas tanks are sealed otherwise you would smell gas. This is why your gas cap "clicks". The "evaporation" this claims is trivial and not seen in gas mileage. How fast does gas evaporate in a gas can in your garage? Third - vapors are a trivial amount of gas. Not seen in gas mileage or your payment and makes you annoying to other customers at the pump.
Look at the source Don. Kinder Morgan Pipeline, San Jose, CA does not participate in rumors and got the information from them. Besides, there is no such thing as a fake email, either it is an email or it is not. I have never received anything about gas in my email, nor do I want any of your hot air either.
I've heard some of these things before and often wondered if they really worked. With today's prices, sure doesn't hurt to try!
These were excellent! Thankfully we get our gas in the morning....I surely wouldn't of known about the dirt and the truck! Wow! Thank you!
Thanks for the tips!
Great tips! Thanks.
wow- i hadn't heard about these. also- if you're interested, i recently wrote one on how to find the cheapest gas stations online - http://www.associatedcontent.com/article/638321/find_cheap_gas_prices_online_a_little.html
Interesting. Also, when a filling station receives a new supply (from the tanker trucks), the price usually changes. That's one reason why adjacent stations may have very different per-gallon prices. It depends, in large part, on the prices they paid for their latest supplies. Of course, a station may raise prices, if their neighbors do, "just because they CAN" (to paraphrase Slick Willy).
Great topic and wonderful tips!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Very helpful
