Get Noticed by Your Boss

Get that Promotion, Make a Temporary Job a Permanent One or Just Impress Him

Rebecca Smith
Whether you want to get promoted or turn a temporary job into a permanent one you must get noticed. This does not come on its own; you get back what you put in.

Make yourself available, volunteer for assignments and go beyond the call of duty. Get involved so you have the opportunity to show your best skills.

When in meetings be sure to speak up, get involved. Let your boss know you're keeping up. Get up to date information ahead of time before the meeting to stay informed and be able to pop off explosive ideas and throw them into the mix of what's being discussed. Don't let those great ideas die either, make them happen. Your boss will be impressed with the effort you put forth in making them happen.

Keep up to date and current with all that's going on in your profession. Let others know by finding opportunities to express this new found information that you've gathered any chance you get.

Be sure not to ask questions that you can answer. Come to your employer with solutions not problems. If you come to a difficult situation, try to spend time trying to resolve it first and think of possible solutions. This way your boss will be impressed that you came up with ideas to solve the problem instead of coming to him/her with just a problematic issue.

If you made a mistake, do not apologize. Come forward and say you should have done it differently and suggest what the alternative should have been so they know you have learned from your mistake.

You must keep a good working relationship with your boss. Keep communication strong and get to know your boss. Learn more about his/her outside interests and chat about them in during informal activities.

Always be professional, act professional and dress professional. Keep positive and don't complain. Keep out of the office politics and gossip. Stay neutral. Always be prepared for work and stay organized. Manage your time. Think not as an employee but as a business owner.

If you receive any positive feedback from others be sure your boss knows about it. Any progress and accomplishments you have made be sure to document this and present it to your employer for their knowledge.

Make your boss look good. Also, do what you can to make their job easier. This will later reflect on you because they will remember you and it creates job security. Take initiative to get something done when you see it needs getting done. By working hard your boss looks good.
