How do we avoid the temptation to keep using our stored credit card information for shopping online? Usually when we are in debt, we cut our credit cards. It is useful to take this approach with the account still open, rather than closing the account while paying off debt. Keeping the account open during debt payoff will help our FICO score. This score is important in determining future credit, if you should need it. We never know if we are going to have an emergency in the future where we will need the extra help. Keeping your account open and paying it off will show future creditors that you have a lengthy history of paying creditors and other debt. Hopefully, your payments will be on time, every time, and for a good length of time. This is why it is important to keep accounts open after we cut the credit cards so there is no future spending until the debts are paid off.
Temptation is everywhere, but we must fight temptation to do the right things. We may cheat ourselves by cutting our cards in physical form, but still using them digitally online. Here we will discuss the steps of retraining your Roboform or other password-generated software with your stored credit card information.
Say Goodbye to Your Credit Card Digital Friend
Tell your inhuman password friend goodbye, or at least remove all your credit card information. It is hard to say goodbye to some "friends" as Mr. Credit Card Fill-in, but this will eliminate the remaining temptation to submit your credit card information in an e-commerce digital age. Virtual scissors are the equivalent of a delete button. That delete button is now your new friend.
Plan for Virtual Credit Card Digital Deletion
Very few times, a credit card will come in handy. Sometimes, a company or organization will ask a credit card number to confirm your identity. For instance, if you are seeking a credit report online, the credit bureaus may ask for this information to verify who you are. Another situation may arise when filling out an online form such as the Direct Marketing Association to get off the junk mail lists. If you do not submit your credit card information online, you may have to take an additional step. For credit bureaus, this means having to use snail mail and wait a little longer for your report. For the Direct Marketing Association, this means you will need to pay the one-dollar fee they charge for the snail mail method, rather than getting this service free online. These situations are rare times you may need your credit card information. Even though these are small inconveniences, it will prove to be far better to cut and delete your digitally stored and using it to create more debt instead of paying it off.
Digital Credit Card Friend Revisited
Once you have debt paid off, it may be a time to revisit your old password-generated friend. Consider digitally storing the information on only one of your credit cards. This way, your debt is paid off, and you may use the card to avoid small inconveniences. In addition, if you have the temptation to shop after paying off debt, you will only be using one card. Determine the best card to use for this need, such as a one with a low credit limit. This will also help for future spending and avoid future debt.
Your password-generated friend may be good for filling out other information, and if you still need Robo as your friend as your getting out of debt, be sure to delete your stored credit card information.
