Also, sports apparel stores like Footlocker have sales on athletic shoes that are suitable. Make sure to try out the sneakers first. The should provide good support, especially around the arches of your feet.

How to Get Started

If your goal is to work up to walking five or ten miles a day, a good way to start is by walking around the block. Explore your neighborhood and enjoy the environment.

Make sure to warm up prior to and after your exercise. Stretch your arms, legs, and back. Also be sure to drink plenty of water.

What You Don't Need

Don't carry weights with you. The weights add too much pressure to your joints and can cause inordinate muscle tension as well as additional problems. Miscellaneous items like cell phones can be left behind at your house unless you feel that you will need them in case of an emergency. Depending on the length of your walk, you may want to forgo anything that can be an unnecessary distraction.

Additional Resources

If you plan on going on a long walk on a hot day, consider carrying a medium size bottle of water. Music keeps you motivated so carry along some tunes on your iPod or CD player. You may also want to carry a small towel. Keep it light and simple so as not to add additional weight to slow you down. Also having a friend along can help. The two of you can keep each other motivated.

Walking is a simple exercise you can do to lose weight, keep yourself active, and increase your stamina. There are various methods you can use to increase your workout, such as speed walking. Speed walking involves more rigorous movements to help you burn more calories. Whichever method you choose, you should be well on your way to that summer body in no time!
