Timeshare, vacation clubs, online searches, a close friend who's a Travel Agent, and now, become your own travel agent and get paid for it? There are many ways to arrange for cost efficient business & vacation travel. However, until recently the notion of "do it yourself" travel arrangements and get paid for it would be a remote notion at best. That is until you consider the features as well as the benefits of doing so.
Search Engines: Only within the last couple years have internet search engines become more sophisticated and more specialized. Such that they now make it much easier to access information that ordinarily would be privileged to the people who were connected to the inner circle of the travel industry in order to receive such "up to the minute" travel information. (e.g., a travel agent.)
Host Travel Agencies: The ole brick and mortar travel agency is still the basis for why anyone would seriously consider becoming their own travel agent at this point in time because someone (that is a live human being) has got to be there in support to help fulfill customer service needs and otherwise back your play when you book travel for yourself or others. The insurance industry might refer to this as an underwriter. And yes, a travel agency used as an underwriter needs to be licensed and bonded.
Save money: As a card carrying certified travel agent, over time you can acquire credibility amongst the vendors who supply products and services to the travel industry. And credibility typically translates into deeper discounts. So even if you become your own travel agent just to handle your own travel arrangements the savings should off set the resources required to maintain your travel business.
Make money: For example, book just one cruise per year for a group or organization and the money earned by that part time certified travel agent typically represents a reasonable part time income. In fact, one group's subsequent individual member's travel needs throughout the year can keep a part time travel agent quite busy.
Also, if you connect with one of the travel agencies who have expanded their business paradigm to include the concept of relationship marketing, the residual income from the networking process can become quite lucrative and still remain part time. Yes, just like the cosmetic industry (Mary Kay) and the house ware industry (Tupperware) the travel industry has evolved to the point where if you join the "right" Travel Agency you can now receive indefinite residual income from that company on the volume of business written by the people you refer who also become their own travel agent.
Other key questions that can be asked include: How easy is it to become and maintain a travel agent business? What are the hard costs? Can I engage in this as a Home Based Business and are there the same tax advantages as other Home Based Businesses? Which Travel Agencies should I research to consider joining or at least to work with? How do I measure their merits? Can I do this business with out becoming attached to any particular company?
Answers to these questions and more can be gleaned in part if you listen to one of the internet radio shows I recorded in May 2007 where I interviewed the President and Founder of arguably one of the largest Travel Agencies that embrace, encourage, and even help prepare people to become their own travel agent. Post a CommentJA, you're not kidding. Air travel fares are like ridding a roller coaster. The best brick & mortar travel agent is noe hard pressed to keep up. The key now is for serious travel agencies who branch out to include the networking concept to go out and buy or build resorts in as many destinations as possible. This way, a vacation club concept os built right into the same resureces necessary to maintain home based certified or referral travle agent business. Sort of killing all the brids at once. Travel cheap (inexpensively or sometimes free)to a host of desirable destinations, have a business write off, and potentially make gobs of money. Tell me,

Since 9/11, it's been interesting to see the evolution of the travel agent and how home-based agents are becoming stronger.
