Get Rid of Dandruff with Vinegar

Jody Morse
Vinegar is known to provide various types of health benefits to the body. Many even consider vinegar to be the "wonder liquid," and believe that it will offer many different advancements to the medical field in the future - aside from the ones which it has already made. One of the things that you may be interested in using apple cider vinegar for is your dandruff problem. Here, you will learn how you should go about using apple cider vinegar to cure dandruff and why it is believed to work so well.

Are You a Candidate for Using Vinegar to Get Rid of Dandruff?

Anyone who suffers from a dandruff problem can be a prime candidate of using vinegar in order to eliminate their dandruff. However, the best candidate is typically someone who has tried out everything else prior to using vinegar in order to get rid of dandruff. If you have found that dandruff shampoos and other products have not helped eliminate your dandruff, then you really may want to consider using vinegar in an attempt to get rid of dandruff. You may be as surprised as others, who have found using vinegar to be the cure to their dandruff problem.

How Do You Use Vinegar to Get Rid of Dandruff?

The two most common types of vinegar that are used in order to get rid of dandruff include apple cider vinegar and white vinegar. All that you need to do in order to put this method to use is mix half warm water with half vinegar. The amount that you should use will vary according to how long your hair is, but you should be able to make a good estimate. Using a cup, you should pour it over your scalp and rinse it out thoroughly.

How Often Do You Use Vinegar to Eliminate Dandruff?

Using vinegar numerous times on your scalp should not hurt you in any way, though if you do feel any type of discomfort after too many uses, it is a good idea to stop using it. It is recommended that you use this vinegar and water solution once every week to two weeks. Of course, how frequently you use this vinegar solution mainly depends on how often you feel that you need it. Many report that they only need to use vinegar to get rid of their dandruff only once a month, while others feel the need to use it several times a week.

Why is Vinegar Known to Cure or Minimize Dandruff Problems?

Before choosing to use vinegar in order to cure your dandruff problem, the main thing that you are probably wondering is why it is believed to work. Well, the concept is quite simple to understand. Vinegar is believed to remove dead skin from the scalp, which is what causes dandruff. By eliminating the dead skin, you will be getting to the root of the problem - no pun intended. The reason that many anti-dandruff shampoos and products do not work is because they cause buildup which leads to dead skin. Vinegar works to eliminate the dead skin rather than cause it.

Are There Any Disadvantages of the Vinegar Method?

There is one main disadvantage which is associated with using the vinegar method in order to get rid of dandruff. This is that your hair is going to smell like vinegar until the next time that you wash it. If you plan to use this method, it is recommended that use it on a day that you know you will not need to go anywhere that you may care someone is smelling your hair. You can also consider using the vinegar method to get rid of dandruff in the evening or night and then shower the next morning before you go anywhere to get rid of the smell. Regardless of smell, many feel that using vinegar is a wonderful option for getting rid of their dandruff.

An alternative to using a strong solution of vinegar, as this article suggests, is using a weak solution after each shampooing (or no-pooing, if you are doing baking soda washes instead of shampoo). I have done this for years, and in addition to helping with skin flakes, it leaves your hair soft and shine and easy to brush - and any odour disappears after the hair is dry! I also use it as a leave-in spray conditioner on my two boys, who hate having their (long) hair brushed ;-) I dilute 2 tbsp of ACV in 2 cups of warm water and pour it over my hair after washing, and leave it in. I have had psoriasis since childhood, and this has helped more than any special shampoo.

I've never had a very serious problem with dandruff... only after using too much gel, hairspray, etc., but yes when I tried it, it did work very well. It will make your hair smell like vinegar, but you can just wash it afterwards with a conditioner or use a leave-in conditioner to get the scent out.
