You've heard it a million times, but it's the single most important rule in keeping an insect free home. Keep it clean! Put food away in tightly sealed containers, refrigerate anything which has been opened, such as leftovers, sugar, cookies, or anything else that provides even the slightest chance of a tiny roach finding it's way into. When you have spills, clean them up thoroughly and immediately as roaches are attracted to them. Keep your dishes clean, and refrain from having too much clutter in your home. Roaches will find these places and burrow in them. Keep your closets clean and organized. Roaches are attracted to warm, dark, moist places and closets and cabinets will be their hiding places more often than not.
It's a little more difficult to do, but when you see them, exterminate them. Whether that means stepping on them, or spraying, get rid of it. It may seem to be unimportant to kill a single roach, but factor in that a single roach can lay hundreds of eggs. That one roach that you let get away, will ultimately make your pest situation a lot worse.
Keep your home cold. Roaches do not like cold weather, and though it will be uncomfortable during the winter months, open windows or run an air conditioner. You'll find that this causes your roach population to go down significantly if not almost completely. When surrounded by cold, roaches will be unable to bear it and find another home outside of your house.
If you have neighbors who live close by, keep in mind that if you rid yourself of your roaches, they will go to the next nearest home. They tend to travel back and forth, and regardless of how tidy your home is, if your neighbors keep an untidy and unorganized home, you will be lucky if you're ever able to get rid of them. The worse they are at your neighbors home, the worse they are going to be in your home.
Purchase Boric Acid from a Wal-Mart pharmacy, and at night before bed, make sure you have cleaned up any and all water around your sink, bath tub, and base of your toilet. Sprinkle the acid around these places, but make certain it does not get wet, as it is completely ineffective once wet. This process will take a little longer to kill off the roaches, but it works best because as each roach walks or travels through it (and they will because they're attracted to the water your bath tub, sink, and toilet provides) they carry the acid with them and back to their nest of roaches, infecting all of them. Boric Acid acts as a poison and is one of the only effective poisons to roaches. You can purchase it for about $10 at Wal-Mart, and it's enough to last you at least 6 months to a year, but if used correctly you will not need it for that long.
Clean in and around radio's, television sets, and microwaves regularly. Roaches are attracted to the heat these electrical appliances provide, and you'll find that if you pick up your TV set, move your microwave, or other appliances, you're going to find roaches scattering everywhere.
If you know other people who's homes have roaches, do not allow them to bring clothing, furniture, or any other household items to your home as there will very often be eggs inside of it, and you're bound to end up with even more roaches.
These tips are proven to get rid of roaches if followed exactly, but be prepared for patience, as there is no way to get rid of roaches immediately. You will have to follow the steps and stick with it until, and even after, the roaches are gone.
