The housefly is a scavenger which doesn't bite any living animals but spreads diseases when it lands on things. It picks up these diseases when it visits fecal matter, decaying animals, garbage, sewage, and any other areas of filth. The list of diseases that flies carry continues to grow day by day. They carry more than 100 pathogens!
When flies get in your house, you will notice that they are constantly landing on your food. This is the number one way that the diseases are transmitted to humans. When the fly sits on the food, harmful bacteria are transferred to the food, which is then ingested by you. The bacteria can stick to the fly's body or legs, so anytime a fly lands on you or anything that you are going to touch, the bacteria will be transferred to your skin.
Many of the types of bacteria that flies carry are harmless to humans, but some can cause serious diseases such as typhoid, cholera, tuberculosis, anthrax ophthalmia, bacillary dysentery, parasitic worms, Escherichia coli, shigellosis, and infantile diarrhea. If left untreated, some of these diseases can even lead to death!
As you can see, houseflies are a real danger to your family as well as your pets. This is why it is very important that you get rid of them. The first thing you should do is to make sure that your house is clean. Don't leave any food out because the flies will lay eggs in the food. If you have animals, be sure to get rid of their feces from the yard because this is another place where the flies can lay eggs. Be sure that your garbage cans have very tight lids so that the flies cannot enter. Keep the garbage as far away from your house as possible too.
There are also many different types of fly traps that may be beneficial to use. They make indoor and outdoor ones. Flies are attracted to things which give off odors as well as white surfaces. Don't put any traps near food preparation areas though.
Insecticides are another option to rid your property of flies, but this can be very expensive and has been known to cause health problems itself. Once you are free of the flies, you can know that your family is safe from the harmful bacteria of houseflies.
