Even though looking in the mirror after a night of far from deep sleep may be a buzzkill, all is not lost. With a few simple tricks, you can brighten up the area around your eyes and look rested and refreshed.
Two of the most effective, natural and popular tricks to getting your eyes wide eyed and perked up are to use cold, thin slices of cucumbers or white potatoes as cold compresses for your eyes. After you slice your cucumber or potato, lay the slice over your eyes and lay down for approximately 10 minutes. They will cool and refresh your eyes making the puffiness decrease significantly. If you don't have a cucumber or potato laying around the house, try using a cooled tea bag. The tannins in tea are known to reduce swelling and discoloration naturally.
Top models and make-up artists will often leave two teaspoons in a freezer overnight, so that in the morning they can grab the spoons, place the convex part over their eyes, press lightly, and go. The cold from the metal spoon will make the puffiness under your eyes disappear almost instantly. Another model and make-up artist trick for puffy eyes is to pat a light coating of Preparation H under their eyes. The ointment, which is meant to be used on hemorrhoids, reduces swelling completely under the eyes in a matter of minutes, although a lot of people do find this remedy a little distasteful because of what it is originally meant to do. However, it has been used for decades by the fashion Industry to keep late night partying models looking as if they were Sleeping Beauties!
If items that you have lying around the house just aren't making those pesky tired eyes look brighter, then perhaps any number of the eye creams available on the market today will be the answer you've been looking for. Research has shown that eye creams containing retinol and vitamin K will reduce dark circles and eye bags with daily, long term use. This wouldn't be the way to go for a quick fix, but if used regularly could help you avoid needing quick fixes in the first place. Taking a vitamin K supplement or eating foods high in the vitamin, such as leafy greens, is also an option for long term maintenance of brighter, well rested looking eyes.
If all else fails, then be sure to have a yellow or flesh toned cream concealer on hand. By patting the concealer on under your eyes with your fingertips, you will not only more evenly cover the discoloration, but the patting motion will help aid the circulation under your eyes which will help depuff your peepers.
Ultimately, getting 7-9 hours of sleep a night, drinking plenty of liquids, and taking a multivitamin daily are optimum practices for keeping your eyes bag free. However, most of us lead lives that don't always allow for a long night of uninterrupted sleep, so it's nice to have several options to help us out when the mirror tells us we have Rip van Winkled overnight. Undereye bags and circles can make us look tired and aged, but with the right trick, be it a cream or a slice of potato, we can look radiant and rested within minutes.
It is important to keep in min that while these tricks are meant to alleviate the dark circles and undereye bags that accompany lack of sleep, there are other conditions that cause puffiness and discoloration that may not benefit from these tipsm such as allergies. If you suffer from environmental allergies you may want to talk to your doctor about what antihistamine is right for you as allergies and rhinitis are also common causes of tired looking eyes.
So go out and party like the girls on Sex & The City! Just be sure to have some tea bags and a potato waiting for you at home!
