Get Rid of Windshield Fog with a Chalk Eraser and Improve Driving Visibility

And Other Lindy Lou Handy Homemaker Tips

Linda Louise Johnson
Fog bad. Visibility good. Especially when you're driving.
Hate foggy windshields? From now on, carry a chalkboard eraser in your glove compartment. Not because you'll have a sudden urge to teach school, but because you can't see through your foggy windshield and you can't see where you're going. That's right, when your windshield gets all foggy on the inside, just "erase" the fog with a chalboard eraser. It works better than a cloth.
Freeze your Mail.
Ready for another freezer tip? What if you're paying your bills, you seal the envelope, and then you realize you didn't put the check inside? You can:
A.) Stick the envelope in the freezer for an hour or so. Then it will open easily and you can put the check in and reseal the envelope. Hurry before the kids come home from school and see it. They'll tell their friends you think you can send mail through the freezer and you'll get a reputation for being "Crazy Mommy." (Unless they already call you that.)
Or B.) Look at it as a good way to buy time with people you owe money to: "O no did I forget the check?" A variation of not signing the check. "O no did I forget to sign the check?" Of course you would never do that, and neither would Lindy Lou. (What??? Well, once maybe.)
And now (drum roll)
Free Handy Homemaker Bonus Tip from Kim Keason:
Bag a banana to ripen other fruit and veggies
Ripe bananas produce so much ethylene you can use them to ripen other fruits. Put some green pears in a paper bag with a banana, and keep them at room temperature. All that ethylene will confuse the pears so they think they're supposed to start ripening immediately. It works with avocados too. How come? Well, the paper bag surrounds the fruits with ethylene (a hydrocarbon gas) yet allows oxygen to come into the bag so the pears can make enzymes. A few days, and you have luscious, juicy pears that will drip down your chin and add to your "Crazy Mommy" image!

Now you know why one bad apple spoils the bunch. If you keep apples in a barrel to let them ripen, and one of them has a bad spot, it will start producing ethylene and eventually all the apples will be all mushy and not munchy.

This is neat! Who knew bananas can confuse pears? Fruit are stupid, aren't they? :)

This is exactly what I need to read because I often have this problem! Thanks!

Wow, fruity science lessons & life-saving fog elimination in one little article! Honestly, that fog problem freaks me out all the time. I'm buying a chalk eraser tomorrow!! And I had heard abt putting bananas in a paper bag to make them ripen fast, but it never occurred to me to put another fruit in w/ them! I love avocados & often have to wait days for one to ripen to my taste. Now I have a fix. Voila! Thank you your Domestic Goddesship!

Love the chalk eraser thing, getting one immediately! Looks like we have our own "Dear Heloise" here.

  • John Smither3/1/2010

The chalkboard erasers here would be no good for this, more chalk dust than eraser.

I'm really glad to get that one about freezing the mail, although now I have no excuse to use the "oh, I forgot to enclose my check."

  • Trevor Mulligan2/28/2010

I like the chalkboard eraser idea, thanks.
