Maxwell Smart (Steve Carell) becomes a agent because of dire circumstances and his partner is Agent 99 (Anne Hathaway). Then the go and try to save the world! Get Smart.
That might not be totally the gist but really it's good enough. I wanted to see this film because it looked funny. I did not expect it to be laugh out loud funny but it was decent. It was not silly humor as much as it was dry wit. I enjoy that kind.
Steve Carell and Anne Hathaway have phenomenal chemistry. Carell is just becoming such a mainstay that it's awesome to see him change throughout his movie evolution. It would be interesting to touch upon that a little more but I would rather do that with a movie that is far more than Get Smart to spotlight that. He does have great comedic timing and Hathaway is coming into her own as well. She should just stay off the well beaten path with the drugs and the drinking and she'll be a fine young lady.
Alan Arkin was mild and that was part of his humor as his character. The Rock as Agent 23 was charming. Oh sorry he now goes by Dwayne Johnson. Correction.
It was an amusing movie and entertaining. The characters were a riot because they were so different and unique and well rounded. But the over all feeling was that it was just a B rated movie and even though it had potential to be more it just didn't eek it out. I can't say I was disappointed. I was pleased but not nearly as much as I should have been with a Summer movie. It's like this was like it was made for Fall..
Get Smart is a good movie and one that some will find entertaining. It is not a Summer Blockbuster as one would think, but acceptable in the ways of the humor it welded. It's a good thing Get Smart's title isn't a fact but a destination. Room for improvement.
