Get Smart Halloween Costume for Couples: Maxwell Smart, Agent 99

Dress Up as Maxwell Smart and Agent 99

If you saw the movie Get Smart earlier this year with Steve Carell and Anne Hathaway, you may have admired their comic timing - and their clothes as well. They were very stylish secret agents. If you're looking for a couples costume for Halloween, going as Maxwell Smart and Agent 99 is a fun, original idea that should be fairly easy to pull off. Or if you prefer, go as one character or the other. If you start searching now through the closets of family and friends, or at local thrift stores, you should be able to find the right clothing without spending a lot of money. It may be harder to find the right attire for Agent 99, since she must look glamorous, and that means the clothes should fit well.

For Maxwell Smart, you'll need a gray suit, white dress shirt and a golden brown tie. All these should be of a traditional classic style. This outfit is how he's pictured on the movie poster. If a gray suit isn't available, a dark one will do. Or, if you prefer, wear a classic black tuxedo. Dark shoes complete the ensemble.

If you have short, dark hair, you're already halfway there. Otherwise, wear a wig or dye your hair a darker color. Part your hair on the side.

Maxwell Smart can also carry a shoe phone, a prop made famous on the TV show. You can make a shoe phone from a men's dress shoe by painting or attaching a phone dial on the sole. You can talk into the shoe phone occasionally if you like.

Practice such Maxwell Smart lines as "Missed it by that much" and "Sorry about that, Chief."

For Agent 99, look for a white trench coat and white slacks. Add a pair of black high-heel pumps. An alternate look would be a glittery evening dress. Agent 99 should also have long, straight, dark hair; wear a wig or dye your hair if necessary.

Makeup is a must, especially red lipstick and enhanced eyes. Elegant gold-toned jewelry is also appropriate. Glamour is the effect you want to aim for.

Both secret agents can carry plastic handguns, the ones that look like semi-automatics, as long as you're at a party that allows such props. Plastic guns are available at many toy stores and dollar stores. You can carry the gun in a pocket or keep it held against you like you're preparing to go into a secret spy situation.

Dress as Maxwell Smart and Agent 99, and get ready to save the world - while looking fabulous.
