Most of us get paid a monthly salary, then we have bills to pay, things to buy, wants and needs. Once we do receive our salary, do we know exactly what to do with it? This is where budgeting comes in handy. It would be nice if we all had the spending power to buy whatever we want, but in most cases, our finances are not enough, and thus the necessity of budgeting.

Budgeting is an effective way of managing our finances, it can be simple or intricate yet the end result leads to a more organized, structured, and well thought-out use of money.

It is really not that hard to set up a budget, and that being the case, avoids unnecessary waste of hard earned money.

A basic budget should be set up in this way:

-What type of budget suits you?

Your budget could be based on how often you are paid, either weekly, fortnightly or monthly. Depending on these factors how one handles the budget will differ.

- Add up the income from all sources, whether it be business, salary, etc..

- What do I spend on? Make a list of all expenses, and add them all up.

- Now subtract your expenses from your income.

Is the resulting amount positive or negative? If it is positive then, you have been living within your means, and have money to spare. If it is negative, don't fret, there is still room for change and improvement, a little budgeting will do the job and put your finances in a better perspective.

- Now look at your list of expenses identify needs and wants.

Looking through your list, which of these expenses are absolutely necessary? Once identified these have to be a part of your monthly budget, your basic essentials for survival. On the other hand there could be "wants" in your expenses list, things that you could do without. If you have money to spare there is nothing wrong with these wants, it is up to you to decide whether to include them in your monthly expenses or not. However, if you are overspending, maybe now is the time to ask yourself if these "extras" are worth it.

Now you have your budget, you've identified, what you need, what you want, what you can keep, what you can modify. Do not forget to include new expenses and account for everything. You have your budget ready, all that's left is to follow through with it and adhere to it.
