Get Started Building a Treehouse for Your Child

Kevin Nurmi
Nearly every child spends a good deal of his or her time outside. It can be a wonderful place for your child to grow and develop. However, children can often become bored outside too easily and resort to video games or television to pass the time instead. If you are a parent you are probably looking for ways to prevent this from happening. One idea you may want to look into is building a tree house or a fort for your child to spend their hours in.

A tree house can be a great place to play in, but playing in one is not always the best part. Often, children like the experience of designing and building the tree house more then actually playing in it. If you take time out of your day to help your child build and design the tree house of their dreams, they are likely to remember the experience forever. Your child will not be the only person to enjoy the experience; you may find that you will enjoy this activity as well.

If you do not have any good trees in your backyard, do not fear. While a tree can be a great place to start building your fort, it is not a necessity. You can always build a fort on the ground, or maybe even on raised stilts. Just because a fort is on the ground does not mean that it is any worse off then a tree house. It may even be a better idea if your child is not fond of heights, or if you have a smaller child who is unable to climb up into the higher forts.

Before you start planning a tree house or fort, you should first have a good idea of what you want. If you want it in a tree, you need to find the best tree you have, in the best location. If you are building on the ground you may want to find a nice secluded corner of the yard to dedicate to your child's play time. Once you have chosen the perfect location for your fort, you need to decide what your fort will look like. You can either draw up a completely original fort, or search online and in books for great fort building ideas. You can even find full detailed manuals on how to construct your fort. You can start with one of these base ideas, and add your own creative thoughts to it, if that is what you want to do. The sky is the limit when it comes to your very own tree house or fort.

The next step In getting the perfect fort is the supplies. It might be a good idea to set a budget for yourself, because your extravagant ideas may be out of your reach at the moment, and may need to be added on later, as another project. You will likely need the following materials to start your tree house or fort:

-Wood

-Nails

-Screws

-Hammer

-Screwdriver

-Measuring tape

-Saw

-Rope

These may not be the only supplies you need, depending on what kind of a fort you are looking to build, but they are the general things found in most tree houses and forts today. You will probably find all of the supplies you need at a local hardware store, or online.

When it comes time to build the actual tree house or fort, the sky is the limit. Your child will likely continue to play in this fort for years to come, continually making it his or her own special place. They may play house, create secret clubs, or just hang out with friends. No matter what your child uses the fort for, it will be a great lasting investment, and a great bonding experience.
