Thanks to the growing number of universities offering online classes, it is even easier for adults to receive their degree while working and taking care of families. As an online student, I know that one of the largest problems facing my peers is how to juggle all of life's responsibilities and stay at the head of the class. Well, I'm going to break it down for you. Here are five tips for choosing the program that is right for you.

1. Determine if you want to go fully virtual or participate in a low-residency program.

Low residency programs give students a chance to meet their peers and professors one-on-one in a variety of ways, including weekend enrollment and end of the semester workshops in which students showcase their work, where as in fully virtual programs, students may go their whole academic career only seeing pictures of faulty.

2. Determine if you need full or partial support from professors.

Some programs require participated in weekly online lectures, and these programs let you have constant contact with your professor and classmates. Other programs allow you to check in monthly by showing you work in submission packets. In these programs student-teacher duologue comes in the form of letters, emails, and the occasional phone call.

3. Access your internet connection.

Dial-up means no downloading eBooks, public space access such as libraries and coffee houses means no online lectures, and while snail mailing work to your teachers can be done the response time is too slow to be impactful. Be prepared to have a decent internet connection and pay your bill every month - you don't want your service to be disconnected while your sending out homework, trust me!

4. Determine what you want to study.

There are a lot of online programs out there and searching can bring overwhelming results. Using key phrases like "online art school" or "online psychology degree" can not only help narrow your search, but also assure you're spending your money on the right institution for you.

5. Check their accreditation.

So you've found the right program for you - Congratulations! Now, no one likes to think their going to get ripped off, but it happens and it's a good idea to be prepared. Ask the admissions officer at your potential school to verify their accreditation or check their name against the online degree program database by about.com.

You know you want that degree - now go and get it! And with these tips, I know you'll find the program that's right for you. Happy studying!
