Getting Back to the Gym

Nico Riley
One of the most common New Years Resolutions is to lose weight or get in shape. Well something that can help you reach that goal is a membership to a gym. The gym isn't just for athletes, it's for everyday people who want to stay physically fit. For those who haven't been to the gym before or those who haven't been in a long time, it may be a bit intimidating to walk through that front door. Perhaps you've never lifted weights before, or maybe you don't know how to work the machines. You may even be self conscious about other people watching you as you work out. But keep in mind, everyone is in the gym for basically the same reason--to get in shape. So if you want to shed some pounds, add some muscles, or just tone up your body, a membership to a gym is a good idea. Here are some helpful tips thay will help you get the most out of your gym membership:

Get oriented. Most gyms have an orientation program. There are personal trainers who will teach you the basics of weight-lifting as well as how to use the exercise equipment. They will help you to keep track of your progress and work at a pace that's right for you. You can even choose to work one on one with a personal trainer or if you prefer to work out alone or with friends, that's fine as well.

Keep a positive outlook. Being at the gym you're obviously going to see many people who are already fit. Don't let this discourage you from your goals. They had to start somewhere just like you. More than likely they will encourage you to continue on. Remember you're not going to see results unless you try and are consistent. So try some aerobics, yoga, or swimming classes. You'll never know what you can do until you try.

Don't give up. If you take a class or try an activity for the first time and you don't like it, don't dismiss it. It's important to give it another chance. You may be happier with a different instructor or going at a different pace. They have beginner, intermediate, and advanced level classes for you to choose from. Find the one that's right for you.

Remember to stretch. Some people overlook this very important aspect of working out. Sure, stretching doesn't burn as many calories as a cardio workout but you shouldn't skip it. Stretching before and after you exercise can help reduce your risks of injury and relieve post-workout soreness. You want to keep your muscles loosened up to help alleviate cramping.

Get some gloves. If you're going to be strength training at the gym, buy some weight-lifting gloves. They protect your hands from getting blisters and calluses and they're not expensive--only about $10 a pair. Gloves also come in handy when you need to loosen and adjust knobs on a weight machine. You're able to get a better grip so consider this small investment.

Make some friends. It can get lonely working out alone. Find some people at the gym that you connect with. Maybe there's someone in your class that you buddy up with or a friend that spots you when you lift weights. It's more fun to go to the gym when there are friendly faces around. And you're less likely to stay away from the gym so long when you know that your presence will be missed. So make friends and workout together.

So there you have it--a few basics for getting back in the gym. The only thing stopping you is yourself so if you really want to get back in shape, don't keep putting it off. Put your best foot forward today and before you know it, you'll start seeing the fitness results you've been wanting.
