Getting Your Book Written

What Works for Me

Shawn Zapalac
For many years I started writing various books that would stall before I finished them. Writing a book of any kind is a daunting task. I would often start one then hit a spot to where writer's block struck me. A few years back I overcame when I looked at it in a different way.

My hindrance was trying to write my books from beginning to end, word by word. I pushed through that on my first book,Galveston Bay Fishing which was published last year. Since that was a guidebook I could break the book up into separate Word documents on different chapters. Sometimes different parts would flow better than others and I was able to work on the chapters separately. When broken up into separate documents it served as an outline and also completed parts and left less to concentrate on.

Completing chapters gave me incentive to finish more and made the finish line more visible. Completing the first book was a big hurdle, and though I found a few things I could have done different as it was a learning experience. Currently I am working on a variety of books, and with my system I am able to contribute to each one when it is the right time.

I hope that helps all you writers out there that struggle with getting your book finished. Writing can be a lot less scary when you do it in small bites.
