Getting Discounts on Car Insurance

Teresa Hoyt
Car insurance is a necessity, like food, clothing and shelter. If you have a car you can't be without it. The expense is a big item in the family budget and it would be great to save money but it is also very important to get the coverage you need. Ask for a discount and see what you can save.

Some good agents my make sure you get your discounts, but some may not. Be sure you get all the discounts you qualify for by asking as many questions as you can. Discounts are available for safe drivers with a good driving record. Just control yourself and drive safely and it will save you money (not to mention your life). Point out to your agent that you have a clean or nearly clean driving record.

Choose a sensible vehicle. Driving a normal, safe, modest car will help you save money. Cars that are very expensive, frequently stolen or cost a lot to repair will cost much more to insure. No Escalade. Think sensible sedan or minivan. Foreign sports cars that cost a fortune to repair will be covered with the higher premiums you pay. Choose your car intelligently and you will save money not only on the car but on insurance year after year as well. You shouldn't have to ask for this discount as it should be apparent to the insurer.

People with certain occupations may qualify for a discount. If you are a teacher, doctor, lawyer or whatever it may be, mention it to the agent and see if there is a discount for you based on occupation. Name your employer too in case there is a discount for your company. List any organization you belong to like AAA, AARP etc., and mention military service.

Ask your agent for a discount because you are such a good customer. If you have other policies with the agent like homeowners insurance you should expect reduced rates. Mention how long you have been with the insurance company and point out that you pay your premiums on time. You many also get a small discount for paying quarterly or annually instead of monthly. Ask how much you can save by making fewer payments.

If $1,000 or $1,500 won't throw your family budget into a tailspin, or if you have an adequate savings account, raise your deductible to save money. If you have enough money to pay the higher deductible when you have an accident, take the higher deductible and save money every month. You can save up to 30% by raising your deductible. You could save thousands if you years without having an accident.

Once you have done this with your present insurer and feel that they have given you all the discounts they are going to, find another company and do it again. Shop around for the best rates. You may save money with another company. Laziness and complacency may leave you paying higher rates for years with your old company when a new one could provide the savings you need.
