Getting Your First Tattoo: Things to Consider

Lisa Marie
Tattoos are very popular these days, which means that the thought of getting one may have crossed your mind a time or two. When deciding whether or not to get a tattoo there are many things you must consider before taking the plunge.

The biggest question you must ask yourself and answer honestly is if you can live with the tattoo for the rest of your life. You must remember that tattoos are permanent, even though you can have them removed through laser treatments, you are more than likely going to keep your tattoo for the rest of your life. Laser removal of tattoos is not cheap and doesn't come without pain. So you must decide if you want the mark of a tattoo on you forever before getting one.

Once you reach the conclusion that you can live with having a tattoo forever, it's time to decide what to get. Most people, if not all, choose tattoos that mean something to them. Personally, I chose to get a tattoo of a butterfly to symbolize to myself that I was finally independent.

After choosing what to get you want to put some thought into where on your body you want the tattoo done. Do you want everyone to see your tattoo? Do you want to be the only one to see your tattoo? Or do you want only select people to see your tattoo? These questions are important to answer for many reasons. You may not want a tattoo of a naked woman on the side of your neck if you are a lawyer or a businessman, so make sure you choose what it is you want and where you want it placed before going under the needle.

After making all these important decisions you need to decide where to go for your tattoo. I recommend asking friends, family and acquaintances where they had their's done. You are going to want to choose a reputable tattoo parlor, with great artists. Based on recommendations search the Internet for information on all of the recommended parlors and artists. You may also want to visit a couple parlors and meet with a few artists before finally deciding who you will have do your tattoo. Some artists will want to meet with you prior to your appointment to discuss what it is you want, and possibly to even design a tattoo for you.

Keep in mind that a tattoo is for life, so make sure that what you choose means something to you, and is done by an experienced artist at a reputable shop.
