The Funky Ferndale Art Festival kicked off last night (Friday, Sept. 17) on West 9 Mile near Woodward. It had many of the usual booths that you'll find at most street festivals, including jewelry, knickknacks and raffles, but in true Ferndale spirit, also contained many unique vendors. These included funeral dioramas, beautifully bizarre incense burners, and one-of-a-kind clothing items.

The festival is located between Woodward and Planavon, a stretch of 9 Mile with abundant dining options, but if you are seeking the true street fair experience, you will find the usual assortment of taste treats. Elephant ears, sausages, fresh lemonade, and more make for pleasant dining when strolling the street and examining the booths.

Adjoining the Funky Ferndale Art Festival is the Live Green Fair, which is set up on a small section of Allen Street off 9 Mile. There are only a few booths here, but they focus on things like alternative energy and organic foods. There was even an electric car made in Michigan to check out.

These fairs will run through Sunday the 19th, closing at 7 p.m. on Saturday and 5 p.m. on Sunday (according to the sign at the fair, some booths seem to stay open later if they think there is more business to be had).
