Getting Your Garage Clean This Spring - Tips to Live By

Lance Esondi
The garage is part of the home that eventually becomes the place for your excess storage and junk. If you don't have a good place for it, stuff normally ends up out in the garage which is out of the way from your normal day to day living spaces. The problem is that eventually it fills up and becomes a huge mess. You can't find anything. You might not even be able to use your garage for parking anymore. Something has to be done to get it clean again.

Look around the garage for obvious items that you could get rid of. Start with the largest ones so that you can start opening up some space to work in. If you have a little space to move things around and get organized, it's much easier.

If you haven't used an item in over a year, you probably aren't going to ever use it again realistically. It's a good idea to consider getting rid of these things. If you don't, you could end up having one of those garages with items untouched for decades storing things that someone else could have been getting use out of.

Get a system of organization that you can follow. For those using the garage as storage, getting some shelves on the sides of the garage that go floor to ceiling make sense. Many people will organize their items by season. You probably have things like Christmas decorations that could go in one place while other things could go in other spots. This makes it easier to find things in the long run.

Don't trash everything you don't want. If it's in good shape, give it away. It's not best to throw items away that someone else can use. Start giving away things to friends or even your local neighbors. They will appreciate the gesture.

Good advice. I've been looking at my garage every time I pass that way, knowing that I will have to tackle it soon. I don't know how it got so messy and crowded! I'm going to follow your advice and start with the big stuff first, instead of piddling away time organizing the little things.
