Getting Government Help for Your Debts

Kristi Patrice Carter
It is a little known fact that the US Government has set aside millions of dollars to be allocated for grants to private individuals and groups. Most Americans do not know of the existence of these grants, much less than this money can be used to provide relief from disasters, emergencies and personal debt. If you are buried underneath a mountain of bills and financial obligations that keeps growing, you may want to look into getting government help to pay your debts.

The grants are not intended to rescue financially irresponsible citizens who keep spending money with no intention of paying it back. Due to this, these grants are not widely publicized and the average American citizen has no idea of their existence. Government grants are usually eligible to a specific set of people. Criteria for any one grant can include being a minority, disabled, small business owner, college student, low income earner and more.

Grants can be ideal if you are burdened with suffocating debt because they do not require you to undergo a credit check and the grant money received does not have to be paid back. This is quite unlike a loan many people take out to pay off their debt that can accrue interest and will always need to be paid every month. Individuals and groups that are seeking government grants must usually meet certain requirements, depending on the grant they are applying for. Read all the information about a specific grant before beginning the application process to determine if you meet those requirements.

Criteria for a grant can include how old you are, where you live, if you were born in the U.S. and more. Typically, proof of all financial information will have to be provided including your income and expenses. A grant application will also ask how much assistance you are seeking, what you are seeking it for, and the reason you are applying for the grant. Give your answers in a clear and concise manner on the application so the grantor can more easily accept you. Reasons for applying for a grant can include obtaining further education, paying for unexpected medical expenses, starting a small business or eliminating personal debt. These grants were intended to provide financial assistance to individuals and groups and further the strength of the community.
