You have probably heard of the Pell grant, which is for lower income students attending college. But it's not just for graduating high schoolers just entering college for the first time.
Anyone can receive the Pell grant who is eligible due to income levels. Even if you're and older adult, retired, have a house full of kids, no one is ineligible because of age.
You of course have to meet certain eligibility requirements, but age is never a factor.
What is a federal grant?
A federal government grant is money you never have to pay back. Ever. It is not borrowed money, it is not a loan. It is money you can apply for, receive, and spend in a manner consistent with the terms of the grant.
If the grant is for college, you must use the money to pay for college expenses. Some of the money can be used for living expenses, but the majority goes to books, tuition and other school-related expenses. If your grant is for starting a new business, the money must be used for the business.
Always get receipts and keep track of what you spend your grant money on, in case there are ever any doubts.
How do I get a federal grant to pay for college?
Pell grants that help pay for college are the easiest type of grant to apply for, and they're the easiest kind to get.
If you are eligible according to income guidelines, you will most likely get approved. It's easy to apply.
You can apply online at any college, or from your own computer, at the government's official website, grants.gov.
If you need help, just go to your college's financial aid office, and there will be someone there to help guide you through the process. The system is now totally online in most places, so you will no longer have to fill out forms by mail, so it is a much quicker process than it used to be.
