I will start with grades and how important they are. One thing you have to remember is that no matter what your grades are in the past, your senior year still counts. In my case my senior year was the most important out of the four in high school. The trick here is to sign up for easy classes, which will bring your GPA up significantly. Once you get the easy classes you will just need to pay attention in class, that's all you have to do and your 4.0 is secured. Of course you will need to pay attention to the important classes like English, Math and Science. Even if your grades were bad the first three years of high school you still have a chance. However you will need to be right on time with everything.
First you will need to make a list of 5-7 colleges, which you think are best for you. Do the needed visits, and research. Talk with your parents too because most of the funding will probably come from them. Have in mind also that in state tuitions are much cheaper than out of state. So you have your list of colleges and you are ready to apply. In the list you will need to have at least two colleges that are very hard to get in. The reason behind this is because you should always try to reach higher and you should not care about statistics and numbers. The processes of sending applications are pretty boring, but you have to make sure you are entering and sending the right information to all the colleges. One thing that you might want to do, if you have a bad GPA, the first three years but your senior year you have good grades is to send your current grades with your application. Also one great addition to every application is a letter of recommendation from your teachers. Some colleges require it, some don't but in both cases you should have at least two. You should get a letter from your English teacher and an activity teacher. The reason is that with the English teacher the college will get prospective for your academic personality and with the activity teacher letter, you will be able to show them what's your personality and qualities outside of the classroom. I recommend you send your applications by September 30th because its a fact that early admissions are more likely to be accepted. The colleges might take a while to respond depending on how big the college is and how many people applied to it. The fastest way to check your application status is via the internet. Another thing that can happen to you is that they might need more information, or an essay. You need to provide the needed things as soon as possible because; in the same time people are taking your spot. It is a possibility that you might not be accepted in all of the colleges you applied, and that is perfectly fine.
If you are not accepted in college by December 1st you might want to think about applying to other schools, which hopefully are accepting late admissions. When you get accepted you will need to fill many different kinds of documents, and you will need to do some important choices. Whatever you do, you should take into consideration talking with your parents and discussing with them what is best for you.
Getting into college is a pretty painful experience, but once you get in you will be very proud of yourself. Never forget to thank your parents because the probability is that they are the people who helped you the most.
