It is crucial to have certain documents such as your social security card and a valid driver's license or state ID available. A few weeks after I was hired as an audiovisual assistant, I had to go back to the human resources office on the campus to present some of these materials.
Do you ever look for openings on certain web sites such as monster.com? Well, you should check your school's web site for postings.
Is it correct your university publishes a newspaper? If it does, you should check out each edition. Like major publications, many school publications post help-wanted ads.
How about taking a look at the bulletin boards at your university? There are probably job openings posted on at least one of them.
You must have plenty of time available to apply for a position. There is a possibility that after you answer an ad, you will have to go to the campus HR office and spend at least thirty to sixty minutes filling out an application.
It is important to be prepared when you go to the personnel office. One thing you should take is an ink pen - you should never assume this will be provided. The second is information that contains the dates of when you worked at each previous job. The third is information that reveals the names and phone numbers of the supervisors you have had. The fourth is a list that has the names and phone numbers of at least three people who have known you for years and are able and willing to give you a good character reference.
If you get an interview, it is vital to do well. You can help yourself by being on time; not saying anything negative about a former boss; showing interest in the position; displaying good manners; smiling and showing frequent eye contact; smelling good; and dressing professionally.
You must show gratitude. At the end of the interview, you should thank the interviewer.
It is essential to do a post-interview follow up. Within the next day, you should send a thank-you note. A few days afterward, you should call the hiring manager to check on your status.
It is helpful to develop strong typing skills as well as software skills that include Microsoft applications such as Word and Excel. Some of the school positions might require you to have this background.
